I picked this up, and it is a fantastic (but too short) article. That journalist did a hell of a job - I really recommend this for anyone interested in Colombia. It really made the FARC more interesting to me. Before I just thought of them as thugs and murderers with a completely disingenuous agenda, but I have to admit a grudging respect for some things they apparently do. As usual, I suppose, things are never exactly cut and dried in Colombia.

Don't buy this issue! I think it's very unfortunate that National geographic chooses to focus on Colombia's drug trade, when they could cover Colombia's marvelous ecosystem, cultures, landscapes, fauna, and flora. That's the side of Colombia that people outside of Colombia don't get to see or hear much about. That to me would also be a more appropriate topic for a magazine like National Geographic. Once again we see how the foreign media chooses to focus only on Colombia's negative aspects. I know I definitely won't be buying this issue.

Agreed! I suggest reading Walking Ghosts by Steven Dudley, it tracks the begginings of both the Guerilla movements and the UP, as well as the eventual destruction of the UP and current Guerrilla movement. It gives great insight into the struggles on both sides.

Thanks for replying,I found it very interesting to hear peoples views towards the article in the national geographic magazine,I bought this magazine because if I see anything that says Colombia in any magazine I have to read it ,I would like you to know that I do have zero tolerance for illegal drugs in any form and yes it is unfortunate that the media of the world need to focus on the bad things to sell magazines,but than again it is up to the individual what they believe.
Yes Colombia has been tagged with bad comments,like drugs and kidnappings,but I think most of these comments come from people who have never visited the country or just believe what they read.
I do know Colombian's and anyone like myself who has visited Colombia truely know know what a beautiful country it is with very friendly and happy people.

Myself I'm glad they advertise colombia as negatively. Keeps the idiots specially americans out (I'm American) Colombia rated I believe number 73 for countries to live...I love that :) So make sure and tell everyone how bad it is there...I like having just the few there. I don't want it to end up like Mexico or Costa Rica...I like paying 50 cents for a beer.
