Juanes to have a concert in Cuba

I just read in El Tiempo about Juanes' concert in Cuba which will be held on September 20th.
During an interview with Teresa Rodriguez, the Cuban-American host of Univision's "Aqui y Ahora'' (Here and Now) Juanes said that he wasn't being used or being manipulated. He was referring to the controversy and the comments that people in Miami were making regarding his concert.

As much as I dislike the Cuban government and the Castro brothers, I don't criticize Juanes for wanting to do a concert in Cuba. He's doing it for the benefit of the people and not for the government.

However I wonder if he is going to have any problems with Homeland Security or inmigration on his way back to the states. I know the U.S. government doesn't allow non Cuban green-card holders to visit communist countries. I've heard of people who have lost their green cards over this. But I'm sure he's gotten all the necessary permissions to do his concert.

What's your opinion?

Already discussed here:

http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/juanes-to-play-his--peace-withou...

1.) "... I know the U.S. government doesn't allow non Cuban green-card holders to visit communist countries. ..." That is incorrect. Cuba is the only country on the planet that Uncle Sam has made a no-go zone for tourist travel.

2.) "... I've heard of people who have lost their green cards over this..." That has never happened.

3.) "... But I'm sure he's gotten all the necessary permissions to do his concert..." Bingo.

I support Simon 100% on this one.

The Miami Cubans who are whining about this are the biggest crybabies in the entire US. Thankfully most of them are old farts who will all be in nursing homes soon where their moaning will finally be unheard...

Cheers Terry, 1.)''... disagree with you. Besides Cuba, try to go to North Korea on vacation with a Green Card (not as an American but as a U.S. resident) big surprise when you come back.

2.)''...Strongly disagree. Again go to Cuba on vacation with a Green Card. Come back and show your Green Card to inmigration at the airport and tell them you went to Cuba for a vacation. Hmmmm, not smart.

3)''... Agree.

mrgizmo,

Sorry, I misread your initial statement. I have no idea what the policy is regarding green card holders and North Korea, but there are no restrictions for US citizens visiting anywhere in the world except little old harmless Cuba. It's an embarrassingly stupid bit of US foreign policy.

However you are wrong about green card holders visiting Cuba. No one has ever had their card pulled by the OFAC for visiting Cuba as a tourist.

CT--"No one has ever had their card pulled by the OFAC for visiting Cuba as a tourist"that is true! The only thing that can happen if a Non Cuban goes as a Tourist with a Valid Visa is that they can fines you. Fines were imposed during the Bush years but Obama has relaxed this enforcement. Green card really hasn't anything to do with it, a Cuban or Gringo could travel to Cuba via a 3rd country and request his passport not be stamped in the Havana airport and your home free. You do not need a green card to do this.

I agree with your saying they are they are the biggest bunch of Whiners! 40+ years ago if they did more fighting and less whining they would have their Island. Instead, they run off to Miami and complain from the safety of Miami's Little Havana. Castro didn't take their Island, they ran away and gave it to him. They have no one to blame but themselve,,,

There has been a lot of very negative Letters to the Editor sent in by the Miami Cubans(the Right Wing Looney Tooner faction) very critical of Juanes Concert. Below is a letter typical of what has been coming in from The Versaille contingent. Anyone who lives here this is where all the Old Crazies from the now defunct Alpha 66 Brigade hangs out and spends there days. Cuckoo-Cuckoo is the password to enter their group !

miamimike, thanks for the link to that article. I like your comment about the fact that all the Cubans went running to Miami instead of staying and defending the island. As far as people criticizing Juanes for not inviting the Stefans, the Stefans are the ones who are Cuban, why didn't they ever try to do a concert for their people in Cuba? It's easy to say, "Ah they can't go in because Castro will keep them, hurt them, etc.'' then how would it be different if they are invited?
Again, why didn't they take the initiative themselves? Juanes is NOT doing it for the government, he's doing the concert for the people.
I'm sure Cubans in Miami feel betrayed by Juanes, what bunch of whiners, in Spanish we say "Ni raja, ni presta el hacha'' -- since they don't do it, they don't want anybody else to do it.

The person who made the comments on the above link are not the Stefans, so I'll give the Stefans the benefit of the doubt that they are not criticizing Juanes for doing the concert or for not inviting them.

Adelante Juanes!

MrGizmo---The Estefans are also in that right wing category. Though they have not said anything Publicly in this latest Juanes hallabaloo, they have said plenty in the past here locally in the same vein as those criticizing Juanes currently. I would hazard a guess once the Castros are gone you will see them going back to the island to trying invest and make Money in one shape or form, even though obviously their parents/grandparents were some of the ones who ran from the fight effectively turning over their Island and way of life to Castro.

That's too bad. I don't know about Gloria Stefan but I've heard many times that her husband is money hungry and a back stabber in the music business he is in. (Charging you royalties if he breathes in the same room that a song was composed in, even if he didn't have anything to do with it.)

I wouldn't doubt that Gizmo. They didn't get the Millions to buy that Nice Big Mansion on Miami's Star Island as they have being 100% honest. Emilio & Gloria own a lot of Miami Beach Reality also. BTW, they recently they bought a "piece" of the Miami Dolphins Football team and a few years ago, they were robbed by their Housekeeping Staff. Gloria lost about $250,000 worth of Jewelry and other items that were never made public.
