Juanes Sings for 'Peace Without Borders; It's the BOMB!

Some of Latin music's biggest stars plan to join Juanes to perform a free concert atop a bridge linking Colombia and Venezuela in a show of unity among neighboring South American countries still recovering from a diplomatic crisis.

Others scheduled to perform: Juan Luis Guerra, Miguel Bose, Carlos Vives and Alejandro Sanz.

Juanes, the Grammy-winning Colombian rocker, said the "Peace Without Borders" concert _ scheduled for Sunday _ is an effort to ease tensions caused by a Colombian raid into Ecuador to kill a top rebel leader on March 1. In response to the attack, Ecuador and its ally Venezuela briefly sent troops to their Colombian borders.

"We want to consolidate the union between our peoples," he told reporters Tuesday by telephone from the Dominican Republic. "We are brothers and sisters, we are equals. We just have to raise one flag together, the flag of peace."

The artists will perform on the Simon Bolivar Bridge linking Cucuta, Colombia, and San Antonio del Tachira, Venezuela, while fans from both countries line the banks of the narrow Tachira River that marks the border, local officials said.

Latin pop, rock stars sing for peace

The Associated Press

Tens of thousands of Colombians and Venezuelans flocked to a border bridge on Sunday for a free concert that Grammy-winning rocker Juanes organized to help heal the worst crisis in Andean relations in decades.
Held atop the Simon Bolivar bridge connecting the northeastern Colombian town of Cucuta with San Antonio in Venezuela, the show also featured Colombian singer Carlos Vives, Dominican Juan Luis Guerra and Spain's Miguel Bose and Alejandro Sanz on the playbill.

Below the span, which was draped with a huge banner reading "Peace Without Borders," thousands of fans dressed in white enjoyed the music in a dried-up river bed.

Juanes' idea for the concert was born out of a bitter quarrel that started March 1, when Colombia launched a commando raid into neighboring Ecuador to kill a leading rebel commander and nearly two dozen other members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

Venezuela and Ecuador both withdrew their ambassadors to Bogota in protest and sent troops to their borders with Colombia.

The three nations' presidents shook hands and reached a tentative detente soon after at a Latin American summit in the Dominican Republic, but Juanes, a Colombian, decided to push ahead with the concert to promote good neighborly relations.

"As a Venezuelan, I am happy that we are strengthening the peace with our Colombian brothers," concertgoer Alvaro Riano said Sunday as he hawked white T-shirts to the crowd.

"Music is a weapon of peace, and the people who came here, came ... to listen to the music," Bose told Caracol Radio before the concert.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe had planned to attend but canceled on Sunday, saying Juanes' manager asked him not to come because the show "was not to be a political event."

_______________________________________________________

We spoke with Juanes in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on his way home.

So why a bridge?

``It would have been much more practical and simple to do it in a city, but the border is a symbol of peace between all countries. And this message is for everyone, all the countries in Latin America and the U.S. as well.''

Do you think this concert -- or music -- can really make a difference?

``It's not that a song by Alejandro or Carlos is going to change people. But music becomes an excuse to send a message, that we're all here together building peace, that we are here as citizens and this is what we want, and we have to be heard. I think the governments have to understand and listen. We don't want to get involved in conflicts between people. We've had enough internal conflicts.''

How did the artists react when you invited them?

``Incredible. They immediately said yes. Everyone was super responsive. I think they all share my feelings: How can we use our music to support this, use our art for something important?''

Do you think artists have a responsibility to use their fame to help?

``It doesn't cost us anything to do something positive, and we've enjoyed so much love and support from people. In my own case I feel it as an obligation.''

MitchAlvarez why are you are so f*** ignorant? Shakira has done more for charity than all of the "entertainers" at the Peace Concert combined. Hell, she has probably donated more than most of these men ever made. I heard that she has given and or raised over $200,000,000USD to charity…$45,000,000USD of her own money. Through her work she has supported programs for Adoption, Fostering, Orphans, AIDS, Children, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights, Hunger, and Poverty. Shakira also supports charities such as: ALAS, Live Earth , ONE Campaign, UNICEF, Pies Descalzos, Treatment Action Campaign and she is currently a UNICEF Goodwill Amabassador. What have Juanes and the other male singers done for charity besides this concert? No doubt that Juan Luis Guerra and Miguel Bose have given to charity over the years, but what else has Juanes done except cheat on his wife.

So why dis on her? I think she is currently on a world tour that was was planed for over two years. This Peace concert was planned about 2-3 weeks ago. Why not dis on the organizers…all of the singers were male…no women…why? Sure, they are all good singers and deserve a great deal of recognition, but it looks like there was a heavy male bias for the featured performers.

The concert was a wonderful effort…anything is that promotes peace is valuable, but don’t jump on someone who has contractual obligations elsewhere in the world. And someone like Shakira that has made a huge and continual effort to help so many people. The quality of the concert was average and all I saw was a mass of confusion before a new act came on stage along with poor sound quality. But, it was still a great thing to do and certainly worth the effort.

But Mitch, my man...How come no woman names were featured at the concert except as back-up support? Hell I'm sure Piedad would have showed up if she were invited. She is always ready to be seen in public. And with that big ass of hers she would have rocked the entire continent.

“Shakira once again proves she's a fake Colombian"? Mitch, I think the only fake in here is…you!

...and so it goes

My point is that Mitch just jumped on Shakira without even looking into what she does to help the less fortunate. Calling her a fake is just f***ing ignorant. I like some of the music that Shakira has as I do Juanes, but it is ignorant for Mitch or anyone else to paint a singular act as the pathway to the Noble prize. How long has Shakira been around and how long has Juanes been around? Both do a tremendous amount of good and no doubt Juanes deserves a ton of attaboys for what he did yesterday. But don't jump on someone becasue they may have had other commitments 3,000 miles away and then call them a fake.

Again...why no females acts at the Peace concert?
