Juanes asks Hillary Clinton support for anti-landmine campaign

Colombian singer Juanes Monday met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to ask support for his campaign against anti-personnel mines in Colombia.

Juanes -- chairman of the Mi Sangre foundation that seeks to help victims of landmines and combat the illegal use of the explosives -- reportedly also talked to Clinton about his plans for a second Peace without Borders concert that he organizes with Spanish singer Miguel Bose.

Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, Thomas Shannon and a number of Congressmen were was also present at the meeting to hear the Colombian about his humanitarian work.

"All expressed their support for Juanes and his intentions to use music as a way to spread the message of peace," Juanes' manager told newspaper El Tiempo.

She's (hillary) a Good Lady, lets hope she throws her full support behind this issue! Where was past SOS Condi Rice on the issue and what did she accomplish on it? Colombians like Husband Bill and well they should, he started and signed Plan Colombia into law back in 1999, largely resonsible for the improved security Colombia enjoys today.

Notice no comments left on the fact that Hillary's husband Bill, who started and signed Plan Colombia into Law and which is largely resonsible for the much improved state of Security enjoyed by Colombia today. No comments on this? Why Not?

And more important, HE(clinton) signed Plan Colombia into law. Give credit where its due. Personally I could care less who signs what as long the end result is accomplished. Obviously, not much has been accomplished in the past 8 years. If something has, please list a link to the source

Even though I think he was a horrible president, I actually think Bush was a good friend to Colombia. He always advocated passing the FTA with Colombia and even visited the country twice.

That's so that they can continue to blame the drug problem on Colombia - When the stark reality is that they can't own up to the fact that the mostly non-Columbian drug market drives the problem.

If countries (not just the US) where the drugs are consumed actually got their act together to diminish drug addictions on their own turf then the production of drugs (and all of the illegal money from it that fuels violence and corruption in Colombia) would decline, and Colombia would have good shot at developing a genuinely stable atmosphere.

But no, it is too easy to point a finger at another country and say that the drugs are their fault. Colombia takes the fall, and the US looks generous for sending money, promoting an agreement... but the root problem remains.

Meanwhile whoever is President of Colombia is stuck in a no-win situation.

Obama conceded that many of the handguns involved in violence in Mexico came from the US, maybe this US administration will be more realistic about what is really fueling the instabilities in Colombia and begin getting more aggressive with managing domestic addictions.

Bush couldn't get the FTA with Colombia passed, because congress wouldn't go along with it. I think congress was a Democratic majority during those years.

RJ===and Congress wouldn't go along with it because they thought, by a preponderance of the Facts, that not enough was done in bringing to Justice all the murderers of those many Newspeople and Trade Unionists. Very few of the Perps who committed thee Murders are actually sitting in Jail this very moment. IMO, it was a good thing not to pass the FTA until Colombia rounds 'em up and sends them to the Corral(jail). In the meantime, Colombia could pass a reverse FTA by dropping their High Import Tariffs on US Products heading into their country as a Gesture. Many Colombian Products already head to the USA Duty Free. How about some long overdure Trade Recipricocity?

Wouldn't want to appear anti-union to a lib. Using stats posted here in the past, trade union members actually were LESS likely to be mudered than the general population. Did union guys get whacked? Yes. That's bad. But come up with an argument that holds water. Worried about the unions, cut off trade with China. That would be at least consistant.

Juanes goes to Washington

He's putting his clout where his songs are. Colombian - no, make that international - rock star Juanes, whose music movingly deals with social issues in Colombia and Latin America, paid a visit to Washington Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, meeting with members of Congress, the Obama administration and the State Department to talk about his work with landmine victims and other humanitarian causes in Latin America. (Juanes' Mi Sangre Foundation works with landmine victims in Colombia, the most landmine ridden country in the world, with three victims a day). The trip culminated in a meeting with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
Juanes and Clinton discussed plans for the next Concierto Paz Sin Fronteras (Peace Without Borders Concert). The first Paz concert last year, with Juanes and other Latin stars such as Miguel Bose, Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Sanz, Carlos Vives, drew 200,000 people to the border of Colombia and Venezuela at a moment when Colombian president Uribe and Venezuela's Chavez were in a tense face-off over border crossings and interference in Colombia's drug wars.

Interesting that this comes as the Obama administration looks to revamp its relationship with Latin America. Things weren't nearly so friendly during the last administration, when Juanes always managed to find a reason to be otherwise occupied when he got an invitation from the Bush White House.
