I agree about the coffee business-it's all pendejada-they have no chance none.

Juan Valdez I do agree it should make us Colombians very proud, although Starbucks is not the target set by them. Their goal is to open around 300 stores world wide in upmarket areas in large international cities, with fine coffee unlike what Starbucks offers which is not exactly the best. Unfortunatelly for the time being we will not be able to profit from this business as stocks are only available for coffee farmers, as this business is owned by the federación de cafeteros which brings together all the growers countrywide. I am glad for them as we all know the coffee prices have dropped considerably in the last 20 years while the consumer prices have risen quite a bit. We know who is making the money there, so with this scheme the farmers will be able to reach the final consumer as a premium brand not as a small logo on the corner of the Nescafe, and not only through the stores but by repositioning the Juan Valdez brand in the US and now taking it world wide.

HOORAY for Juan Valdez! Well I for one am really really glad to see Juan Valdez shops finally opening up. Ever since that phony Seattle style crap hit the market it's been almost impossible to get a decent cup o' joe in the US.

Here's a little known secret about so called "French Roast" and the rest of that Seattle style junk. More often than not it's just super cheap Vietnamese or Brazillian beans over roasted to the edge of being burnt (some would say well past) to cover the awful natural flavor.

Juan Valdez shops will have a hefty marketing monolith to go up against. Millions of gullible gringos have had their tastebuds pounded into submission for years by the Starbucks machine. Now when many of them taste real quality Colombian coffee they are surprised by the delicate flavor and lack of pungence. They actually think coffee is supposed to taste like burnt frioles. Yuk!! Pobrecitos, don't know what they have been missing.

Tinto, no offense, but coffee is NOT like petroleum. Just because it's 80 cents a bound in Vietnam does not mean it's comparable to $1.00 per pound Colombian coffee. Fine coffee, like fine emeralds is produced in Colombia and can not be compared on price alone.

Tinto (Moderator) (Trustee board) says on Sep 29, 2004, 17:14:

Thus sayeth the President "Make it known, all of you, that this is the best coffee in the world and Colombia and its coffee-producing region are the most beautiful and most friendly places, and its people the most hospitable in the world.

Remember that each cup of coffee that is consumed helps prevent illegal drugs and terrorism from growing in Colombia."

Amazing with All The Colombians&Latinos(as)in Miami that they didn't locate one here in Miami. Miami is a huge Coffee consuming market,,,I'll bet latin per capita population it has NYC beat thumbs for consumption. All the coffee shops, Dunking donuts, Epstein's, not to mention the 100s of small cuban expresso shops and Mobile Van Coffee Wagons, all thrive. Come on Down(or up depending) Juan Valdez,,,

Well, Living here in Miami & with the large Colombian Community residing here, either they(my neighbors on both sides of my Condo are colombians and long time miami residents) or I would have heard about its location. Not to mention, Google or Miami Yellow pages haven't heard about its Miami location either. They opened one in NYC because the Colombian Coffee Grower's Assoc already OWNED the Store's real estate prior to opening. Only thing here related to Juan Valdez here are those Coffee makers they sell at Target! LOL Now talk about some of those small Colombian Tabernas in Miami and I know those-but I maintain their offbeat locations,,,Why invite competition,,,

Sorry Guys Still Drink Coffee in my House or Office Don't even go for Bustelo or pilon at the Cuban Cafe's..Another Coffee shop. Juan Valdes should open a coffee shop in Amsterdam there they will do real good.. LOLOLOLOL..Joking Guys..Miami Mike I see a bag of Juan Valdez in Publix will buy..Still drinking Folgers and Maxwell House whatever is on sale. I have gone the economic side here along with Miami Mike..will at least trying and the office I drink the crap the company buys from the office supply vendor. Well one thing is its direct but if they paid out to high price marketing firm they need catch up quick and I see a damn coffee shop everywhere. I guess there is a market for Tinto. To me maybe they should keep to growing because if this flops alot of money will be lost but risks need to be made in life and economies.. Good Luck for Colombian Juan Valdez Growers...which says here that they are the only shareholders right now or something like that.

I love the JV cafes in bogota they are far better than OMA. Coffee is consistently better and cheaper (because they don't have table service I suppose). All the cafes I have been to look great too, great locations.

Staff are quite friendly but SLOOOOOWWWW. Man it takes forever to get a coffee.

Starbucks has NOTHING to worry about until they figure out how to train staff and have enough staff on hand. No one seems capable of carrying more than one thing at a time. They NEVER give you your donut or brownie with your coffee, it takes like 3 people 5 minutes to figure out how to get a brownie from the display to your hands.

I'd think about buying the stock though, because the place is packed and I think they can expand a lot in SA...and they still have lots of room to improve. I'm sceptical they can handle the US market though. They will likely overspend and mismanage.

You won't find the stock listed yet if they are just now talking about going public, it takes time. Be nice if they have ADRs.

Panthdave--Try eBay for Fresh Colombian Coffee Beans it saves you the trouble of lugging it all the way from Colombia and its guarenteed Fresh. You can't get this same guarentee if you buy it in Colombia. If you can get a whiff of the coffee just hadling the Bag, you already know know its not airtight! How long has it been on the Supermarket shelf at Exito or Carrefour(sp)? Hard to tell but I see(smell) this everytime I walk their coffee aisles.I buy roasted beans on eBay (and sometimes green beans and roast them myself)and grind them myself as I control the grind and ultimitely the Brew strength this way. Hard to find a coffee roaster in Miami thet will sell retail to the public-good business idea? http://cgi.ebay.com/5-LBS-FRESH-ROASTED-COLOMBIAN-SUPREMO-COFFEE-BEANS_W0QQitemZ120081048710QQihZ002QQcategoryZ38179QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120081048710

Colombia is on the verge of having the EU... classifying colombian coffee as regional denomination, like Porto wine, Champagne, Perma procciutto, Etc., this will prevent countries like Vietnam from mixing their inferior quality coffee with a miniscule amount of colombian and then labeling it colombian. This will allow colombian coffee to be priced as a regional specialty instead of a commodity and should enable colombian coffee farmers to get an even bigger premium than they already get.

You want to really help Colombia coffee farmers. I will be honest I do not trust the Colombian coffee federation. When I was in Caldas last year my ex's brother in law took me to the farm where he is an administrator. These are campesinos that work on large farms and WORK HARD!!! I have also add they get paid the minimum to work 6 days a week from 6am to 5pm. They do not own any land and have lived in poverty all their lives. I cannot even explain the look on their faces when they were told I was a US citizen and I was only on the farm to check out the beautiful scenery and check out how coffee is grown. It's like they were saying, this guy is really here? Well anyway I also got to learn how the "pueblo" in Caldas gets intimidated by the landowners to support certain political parties. How the coffee federation keeps making poor decision. How These landless peasants are born at the mercy of landowners and pretty much die at their mercy as well. The family of some used to own land but for different reasons were driven off their land. The few who do own small tracts of land usually do not work for large farms. It gave me a better understanding of why peasants in Colombia sometime take up arms for agrarian reform.
Anyway I think that colombia should move on from having coffee as their major food export. It cannot remain that way and hope to expand it economy. I look at what easily grows in colombia and how much we pay for fresh papaya, avocado, berries, pomegranete, maracuya, mora, only to know these do not usually come from Colombia. The other day I paid $3 and change for a cup of rasberries! Well anyway I am not a big coffee drinker but once in a while I will try to buy fairtrade coffee from Colombia. Here are few places which sell them. No its not juan valdez but just as good. The farmers of the cooperatives where the coffee is bought from get a fair price for the price of coffee regardless of the price on the commodities market. The fairtrade movement is actually a for profit endeavor that pays a fair price to farmers while enjoying good margins. Fairtrade products are usually organic and non-gmo so you do not have to worry about un-proven technology going into your food. You get it only the way God intended. That is if you believe in a God.

Juan Valdez vs. Starbucks I would urge anyone considering putting their nest egg on the IPO of JV to go down to the corner of 7th and E in Washington DC where they can watch the hordes going in and out of the Starbucks on one side of the street and NOBODY frequenting the Juan Valdez on the other. Then go inside and ask the counter help any question about Colombia, easy ones, like where it is located. They don't know. Nor do they know how to brew good coffee.

I believe that Juan Valdez's full name is actually Don Juan Valdez Quixote.

Actually yeah Mcdonalds went the fairtrade route using Newmans own Organic coffee. I must say that was shocking, but that does not mean the coffeee comes from Colombia. The only thing is that since their food is equal to killing yourself by the use of narcotics, You will not find me in a Mcdonalds eating shit food. However if I am on a long trip I think I will now pull over to a rest stop with a Mcd's and get some coffee.
