He was with BMW Williams prior to this, not Toyota. One of the reasons he is not doing so well is the dominance of Renault early in the season. His injury that made him miss races didn't help matters. Lastly I don't think he is faster than his teammate Raikkonen. Montoya is a good driver, makes wonderful passes, but isn't consistent. Watch out for McLaren though, if you watched the last race you would have seen one of the most dominating races ever in F1 by Kimi Raikkonen. It will be interesting to see how Montoya does as his shoulder heals and whether he will equal or surpass Raikkonen.

Practice doesn't mean anything. Second qualifying day is the one to watch. It does mean his shoulder is healing though, but Monaco is very tough on this part of the driver, we'll see. Alonso is my driver but I will be wishing Montoya well too.

Too Early... It's waaay too early in the season to put stock in rankings...

But it is good to see that the Ferrari-Schumacher-Barrichello Juggernaut might finally give someone else a chance after the beatings they've given over the last few years.

And I think Kernow is right, Raikkonen does seem a bit quicker than Montoya.
Either way, it would be good to see McLaren back on top this year.

Update: Juan Pablo's Shoulder OK... Montoya is on the mend for Monaco (FORMULA ONE)
EVENING STANDARD , May 20, 2005
JUAN PABLO MONTOYA is confident his injured shoulder is strong enough for him to challenge for a first podium of the season in this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.

Montoya's arrival at McLaren over the winter was expected to spark off a fierce rivalry with Finnish star Kimi Raikkonen but the Colombian has been left in the shade so far.

A two-race absence with the shoulder injury kept him out of the frame at Bahrain and Imola when his replacements - Alex Wurz and Pedro de la Rosa - scored strong points finishes to heap the pressure on him.

ja ja, Carter.

Raikkonen is much much quicker than his teamate Montoya thus far. In fact he is even almost half a second quicker than Alonso who himself is about half a second quicker than the next car Webber.

It is a tough track to pass on and the Iceman looks impressive yet again.

Shouldn't underestimate Juan Pablo.... Only eight rookies have won the prestigious Indianapolis 500 mille race including Colombian Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya in 2000. But wasn't he driving a Toyota then?

Indianapolis 500 is a far cry from F1. In fact a poll of Americans asked to choose which race they preferred at Indy, the traditional Indianapolis 500, the NASCAR event, or the F1 race the overwhelming favourite was the F1 event. Indy 500 is about as boring as driving on the Florida Turnpike. ;-)

I assumed you were talking about F1 not Indy in your original post.

Raikkonen was fantastic in the race, Juan Pablo did well to move through the field to at least a points paying position.

Yeah, seems I remember Juan Pablo saying something like... the Indy 500 is easy... you coast 400 miles and do a little driving the last 100.
Yeah, my original post was F1. And didn't Juan Pablo come in 5th today?

Yes, Juan Pablo finished 5th. He should have finished 2nd if qualifying had not been his undoing. It will be interesting to see what he can do from a good starting position compared to his teamate. I don't think he can turn the times Raikonnen can.

The other factor that helped Juan Pablo is the fact that the Renaults both had very unuasual for them, tyre problems, this slowed the field up and helped the quick cars at the back move up. The pit strategy by McLaren helped in effectivly allowing Montoya to leap frog several places where passing is so difficult.

A nice race.
