Jose, Pepe, Pepito...

So one of my ex boyfriends and a few of my guy friends are named Jose. Since it was hard to have conversations with 3 Joses in the room my ex told me that I can call him Pepito since it’s his common nickname, one friend said that I could call him Pepe since it is also a nickname for Jose...and of course the other one I could just call Jose.

So today I'm waiting in line at the bookstore and I start talking to this guy from Cali who tells me his name is Jose. So in a friendly way I said "eh, so you’re also a Pepe!" He kind of gave me an odd look.

Is it not common in Colombia to call Jose's "Pepe" or "Pepito"? Is it only common in Venezuela and Peru?

From my experience I have several caleño friends who refer to their "unit" as Pepito, so maybe that's the reason you got "the look"...or maybe he thought you were calling him a member of "Los Pepes". I'm thinking it's the former.

Oh great. I called this guy a penis. Wonderful.

I can only imagine what he's telling his friends about the girls at school.

Sylvie I'm from Cali myself and we never use the nickname "pepito" it sounds too cute for a grown man and may be he'll feel embarrassed if you call him that in front of other people and we only use it for our jokes as in "the pepito or juanito jokes".

The most commonly used nicknames for jose are CHEO and sometimes CHEPE which i haven't heard for a long time now...so CHEO would probably be a better option ask anyone they'll probably tell you the same.

Thanks for the infor everyone. I called him "Pepe" and not "Pepito" but maybe he still felt offended.

I'll just watch what I say next time. hehe
