John F. Kennedy- Remarks Upon Arrival in Bogota, Colombia in 1961

In light of the passing of the last of the Kennedy brothers this week, Senator Edward Kennedy, I wanted to share this speech President Kennedy gave when he visited Colombia in 1961.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remarks Upon Arrival at El Dorado Airport, Bogota, Colombia.
December 17, 1961

Mr. President:

I want to express my great appreciation to you and to the people of this country for their generous welcome to my wife and to myself.

The relations which have existed between the United States and Colombia stretch back to the earliest days of both of our nations, and it is a source of pride to me, and I'm sure it is to you, that this country was the first of all of the countries of Latin America that broke relations with the Axis at the beginning of World War II, and was the only country during the difficult and dark days of the Korean War that sent a detachment to fight with great distinction.

Of the one thousand men in that detachment, over two-thirds of them were casualties, and of the 29 soldiers of this country who were taken prisoner, not one displayed anything but the strongest resistance and the strongest courage.

So I come here today to express our warm feeling of friendship, with great sincerity, to the people of this country.
We believe in freedom--in the United States and in Colombia. We are opposed to tyranny of any kind. We are for the social justice for our people, because we recognize that we cannot have freedom unless all of our people have an equal opportunity to the advantages of a productive life--homes-education--work.

These are the things to which the Alliance for Progress--the Alianza para el Progreso-is committed. And therefore, Mr. President, it is particularly appropriate that I should come to this country where you have taken so many steps to put into actual implementation the ideals and the practices to which we are committed.

It is a great pleasure and a source of pride and satisfaction to come here as President of the United States, and to extend once again our hand of friendship.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: The President's opening words "Mr. President" referred to Alberto Lleras Camargo, President of Colombia

He brought us into the new millineum[check spelling], because a leader of the free world is mostly about charisma, and vision, and leadership. From either side of the aisle, we need leaders, such as JFK and Reagan, that have the talents and ability to inspire us. That is why he was so great.

======================================================================================

Antithesis---Link Please to substantiate your claim as I did not know that(what you write). Of interest also to some, the Kennedys are a Gold Star Family due to Joe jr being KIA in WW2. Our family, due to Ted Kennedy's attention on various bills for Veteran's Benefits, was a direct recipient and will always be grateful to him. On JFK and Bobby, they crossed the wrong people and were very ungrateful. When Old Man Joe Kennedy went to Mafia Kingpin Sam Giacana in 1959 for help in swinging the Chicago Vote to son John in 1960 and after having won the election, they brushed him aside like piece of Dirt. Worse yet, son Robert as AG went after this Mobster and belittled him in front of Congress after saying he laughed like a "little Girl". This after he was the Key to helping JFK win the Presidency. Old Man Joe Kennedy in reality wasn't any better then these Mafiosas, a Ruthless Rum Bootlegger who in fact dealt with the Mob in the 20s-30s. I have no doubt he had a hand in JFK as well as Robert Kennedy's assassination. Some people you just don't cross...Let's not forget the Brushoff the Kennedy's gave Frank Sinatra after Frank was asked to get the Hollywood crowd on the JFK Election Bandwagon, practically the next day he ditched his Friendship with Frank, after he used him and his Contacts for the 1960 Election... Pal Dean Martin forewarned Frank this would happen but he never heeded Dean's advice not to get involved. Ted by far, for all his faults, was by far the best of the 3 when it comes to legislation passed to benefit the workingman and disenfranchised. He also got legislation passed early on that took away the Immigration laws that were tilted to Europeans to allow more Latinos into the immigration mix.

After he consulted with his lawyers and political consultants for 10 hours, then he did call the police that there was a young woman (Mary Jo) trapped in his submerged car. Shortly thereafter, Ted Kennedy worked a Bill thru congress to get improved Body Armor and re-inforced Humvees to the troops. Billy on Sam Giacana's involvement in Kennedy's election:

It is generally agreed that the association between the Kennedys and the mob goes back to the years before JFK took over the White House, back to when his father Joe Kennedy was becoming a very wealthy man in the bootlegging business. During Prohibition, Kennedy befriended Sam Giancana, the most powerful man in the Chicago underworld. Together, they made a fortune selling illegal booze and sparked a lifelong partnership and friendship.

Knowing that his past would never allow him to successfully run for office, Joe Kennedy satisfied his insatiable quest for power through his sons, insisting that they enter politics. The elder Kennedy used his significant monetary influence and enlisted his underworld connections to strong-arm support for his son in the media. Here he provided lucrative incentives to editors and journalists alike, in law enforcement, and in business. Joe Kennedy’s Mafia ties pulled through for him, and his efforts translated into John F. Kennedy being elected president in November 1960. When broken down, the margin worked out to a single-vote victory in every poll in America. However, Joe Kennedy made sure there was no connection between the Mafia and John F. Kennedy’s presidential win.

The Mafia and John F. Kennedy
After JFK became president, he appointed his brother Robert to the post of attorney general. Bobby Kennedy immediately set out on a relentless pursuit of members of organized crime, arresting and jailing the very people who allegedly helped get him his job in the first place. His war on the underworld felt like a betrayal to mobsters like Sam Giancana. Especially since Giancana was rumored to have helped seal the election for JFK in Illinois, secure the West Virginia primary that got him the Democratic nomination, and had allegedly been assured by Joe Kennedy that the mob would be safe with his sons in office.

Billy--here's another Link on the JFK/Sinatra/Giacana relationship. I remember in the fall of 1959 when JFK came to our hometown and gave his speech 2 blocks from my Highschool, the Headmaster at Catherdral Prep released all the students 2 hours ahead of time so we could get right up front as a Cheering Squad. BTW, Ex Homeland Security Head Tom Ridge went to the same Highschool then so I am sure he was somewhere in the crowd. For us, the rowdy bunch, it was an extended Smoke Break as we couldn't light up on School grounds. Later after the JFK Rally, our gang went to an afternoon movie peep show located over a sleazy smoke filled Pool Hall and continued to puff away. This Movie house allowed smoking inside. Kool. JFK would have enjoyed it, with his eye for the ladies of all flavors.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout his life, Sinatra sought out alliances with powerful men, both in the legitimate and illegitimate worlds. While his "hoodlum complex" led him toward Chicago boss Sam "Momo" Giancana in the early '60s, his power complex brought him into the ultimate circle of power, that of the newly elected president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Sinatra was close to Giancana, and he wanted to be closer to Kennedy. Behind the scenes Giancana shared that desire because he wanted what no Mafia capo had ever achieved—access to the Oval Office. He saw Sinatra as his conduit. But to have the president's ear, Giancana knew that he would have to give a little to get a little.

In the 1960 presidential election, Kennedy, then the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, was running against the sitting Republican vice president, Richard Nixon. The Kennedy campaign had pinpointed certain areas of the country that could go either way in the election, and they need help securing these areas. The word was passed from Kennedy's father, former U.S. ambassador to Great Britain Joseph Kennedy, to Sinatra: Ask your "friend" in Chicago to help us with West Virginia and Cook County, Illinois. Giancana was willing to oblige, delivering his home turf as well as West Virginia where his outfit had enough sway to influence the election. When Kennedy won, Giancana expected the new administration to show its thanks by getting the feds off his back. Unfortunately for Giancana, it wasn't going to be a simple quid pro quo.

Sinatra had done everything he could to ingratiate himself with JFK. He had performed at fundraisers during the campaign and personally planned a star-studded inaugural gala after Kennedy's election. He had had the lyrics to his hit song "High Hopes" rewritten to make it Kennedy's election theme song. And late at night when the press wasn't looking, Sinatra had shown Kennedy the good life, Rat-Pack style—booze, broads and laughs galore.

Sinatra was living a Jekyll and Hyde existence. By day he was an outspoken advocate for civil rights and social justice. By night he was the bad boy-in-chief of the Rat Pack, personifying every naughty little vice that the American male desired. When the president joined the revelry, Sam Giancana saw an opportunity.

Judith Campbell (AP/Wide World)
At Giancana's suggestion, Sinatra introduced Kennedy to a fetching young brunette named Judith Campbell. Giancana felt that Kennedy would find her attractive because he thought she vaguely resembled the classy first lady, Jackie Kennedy. Kennedy did find Campbell alluring, and the two had an affair. At the same time Giancana started dating Campbell, but according to his brother Chuck in his book Double Cross, it wasn't because he desired Campbell. Giancana had a habit of wooing the wives and girlfriends of men he wanted to control. It was his way of gaining inside information and showing that he could have anything his target held dear. Giancana's affair with Campbell was brief, but this time the strategy backfired on him.

Kennedy's advisors rightly felt that the president of the United States should not be sharing a bed with a woman who was also dating one of the country's top mobsters, particularly when Kennedy's brother Robert, the attorney general, was working so hard to rid the country of organized crime. Almost overnight the president made a turnaround, dumping Campbell and distancing himself from Sinatra, who was stunned by the sudden cold shoulder from the White House. (Kennedy, it should be noted, did not completely clean up his act as far as extramarital affairs were concerned.) The change in attitude was felt most dramatically when Kennedy, who had planned to stay at Sinatra's home in Palm Springs during a California visit in March 1962, abruptly changed his plans and stayed with singer Bing Crosby, a Republican! Sinatra had even gone to the expense of building an addition on his house to accommodate the president and his staff.

Sinatra was mortified, but Giancana was furious. Wiretaps revealed Giancana's disappointment with Sinatra and his low regard for the singer. When it became clear that Sinatra wasn't going to get him what he wanted, the mobster had no use for him.

Never one to put all his eggs in one basket, Giancana was also courting the CIA at this time, promising to use mob hitmen to poison Communist Cuban leader Fidel Castro. It was all a scam, though, to get huge payments from the government for a service that Giancana had no intention of ever delivering. Giancana was playing them, the same way he had played Sinatra. But apparently Sinatra never caught on because he continued to value Giancana's friendship. It was a friendship that would later cost him big time.

Thanks, I bookmarked it for later reading. In one of those Ratpack documentaries, I'm not sure if it was Sammy (funny, a commercial is just playing with Sinatra's "the way you look tonight" as the theme song), but one of the lesser members of the pack said that the difference between Frank and Dino, was that Frank thought he was cool, but Dino knew it.

BTW, the Outfit used refer to all the fake/dead people whose "votes" Giancana used to get Jack Kennedy over the top in 1960, as the "riverside" ward, in an inside joke alluding to all the bodies they dumped in the Chicago river.

Very True Simon.

=========================================================================================

Billy--that's the first time I heard that Term the Riverside ward. I'm not surprised. To this day, I'll never believe that Lee Harvey Oswald was in the Assassination by himself. As well, I don't believe we have ever been told the truth about JFK's disasterous handling of the failed Bay of Pigs Cuba Invasion. I think if the real truth ever comes out(which I doubt it ever will) the Miami Exile Cubans may find their Blame on JFK as the sole person responsible to be misplaced,,,It was an incredibly interesting time in American History, that Era of the late 50s-early 70s. As I was listening to NPR earlier yesterday, it brought up the fact about Richard Nixon's Universal Healthcare Proposal(yep, nixon had a decent plan in the pipeline) in or around 1971 and of all persons, Ted Kennedy was working with Nixon on his plan. As it turned out, the plan fell by the wayside with Watergate taking center stage. Very Interesting.

This is mean-spirited and dangerous, but it was just good, clean satire, harmless comedy, to depict Bush as Hitler or a monkey? Or to do posters about assassination?

As you an see it is alright to reference the monkey when making comments about Bush. Liberal misogyny is OK in America.

Back to the subject of this thread. I am no Kennedy worshiper of any of them but the Bogota speech is a very good speech and use of words to a freind and ally of the USA. 1961 must have been just before the farc got really active, probably still in its infancy, although I have no info on that era in Col politics. Compared to the pres we have today JFK was almost right wing. I wish messiahobama could and/or would give a similar speech today, and mean it. Although he makes the neccesary lip service to Uribe, my thinking is that he holds the views similar to Hugo. KF

miamimike, "Antithesis---Link Please to substantiate your claim as I did not know that(what you write)."

Though I was aware the US government was practically responsible for the creation of paramilitary forces in Colombia, was not aware that it was implemented by JFK as Plan LASO, see link below for more information.

Very interesting trivia MiamiMike, I was just reading about family patriarch Joe Kennedy on Wikipedia and I didn't know he was such an anti-semite, it seems he almost admired Hitler. I also didn't know he blew his chance at the presidency after some dumb comments he made about England's democracy being 'dead' after the German bombings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joe Kennedy wasn't any Ex-Altarboy for sure. This is the first time I heard about his anti-semtic views but I'm not surprised. Other Prominent Politicians liked dealing with Hitler as well, look at Prescot Bush, GW Bush's Grandfather with his currency dealings with the Nazis as an example...What was really stupid was his well known comment as Ambassador about Democracy in England "over" after the Bombings. Dumb Dumb Dumb
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aztec--I'msurprised you find those Reagan/Bush Photos demeaning after the ones you posted of Obama. You need to grow thicker skin.

Hey Elmo--You guys were cheated! Not only did our family get some of that Cheese you show, but we also received USDA Tins of Peanut Butter, Bags of Rice and Government Butter, the whole 9 yards. We ate high on the Hog for a few months and the dates on your Pic(1954) are right on. I remember us getting this Government food from around the mid 50s to the early 60s. Every 6 months or so the Local News would announce the Government Food give-aways and the lines would be so long. They had Semi Trailers full of this stuff, since our city voted Heavily democratic, I guess this Food Give away was part of the Deal for a Good Vote Turnnout. It continued(food give away) through Johnson's Presidency as well. Brings back old memories, all the Moms & Dads in the Neighborhood loading up the Red Wagons with USDA Surplus Food and lugging the Goodies home. One year, if I remember correctly, we got some Government Honey.

Elmo--it must have been quite a heavy Job lugging that big Box of Government Cheese up the Stairs in your NYC Rent Controlled Walk-up Apt. Bet you didn't enjoy that!

Elmo-- We got the USDA Goodies because our city always voted the "Right Way" before, on and after election day. Reagan was the only aberrancy! And of course we voted often. My Neighbor was even caught in the booth pulling the "right" lever for the old neighborhood women. ja ja The local cemetaries were a busy place come election day, those Zombies & Ghouls like in Graveyard 2 were up and staggering to the nearest Vote booth to yank the lever like a Good democrat. Same way the Cuban Republicans do it here in Miami. They say the dead cannot talk anymore but they sure can Vote! ja ja
