Jobs for AMERICANS in Colombia?

For you gringo citizens in Colombia with a valid work visa, there are jobs at the US Embassy. Actually, the STATE DEPARTMENT is ALLOWED to DISCRIMINATE against US citizens by requireing that only a US citizen residing in Colombia and that already have in hand a valid Colombian work permit to work at the embassy. If you live outside of Colombia then the State Department will not allow you, a US citizen, to even apply. They don't want Americans to apply!

What the State Department wants is to give jobs to the wives and husbands of diplomats being sent from Washington. This is called NEPOTISM and is allowed.
If no relative is found then the job goes to a Colombian national who probably will be paid less than what the gringo relative would have been paid. This is called fair?

We have seen mail clerk jobs listed at the Embassy website paying $30,000 USD a year. You cannot apply if you are a US CITIZEN, BILINGUAL and live outside of Colombia. State wants to hire a relative or give the job to a cheaper native Colombian.

Thank you US government for so called "Equal Opportunity Employer".

BTW Funny how so many illegals can walk right into the USA and get a job, buy a house and the federal government does nothing. Then I see US citizens looking for opportunities in this website and other than $5 an hour teaching English little is there for us? This is the so called free trade that our wonderful politicians in Washington are giving us! BOTH D's and R's!

So, check the US embassy website if you are an American living in Colombia with a valid Colombian work visa and are bi-lingual to boot. You can apply. I wonder how many US citizens have actually been hired by the embassy other than foreign service officers or relatives being sent from Washington?

How many US citizen State Department officials do you see when you visit the embassy in Bogota? The clerks are all Colombian are they not?

The State Department discriminates against US citizens. The people it is supposed to represent? Congress just passed a bill for embassy security overseas. In the billions. Yet, in Bogota, some foreign embassies allow you to walk righth up and knock on the front door. The US government is so much loved these days....

jajajaja. The girl looks like Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz. I guess that could be Kat1.

Anyway, on my (our) next trip to Villavo, I'll give you a heads up. I will make the introductions, but you have to do the rest. As far as the taxi thing, I would be lost in your neck of the woods. But I know my way around Villavo almost as well as a local. Just a little bit of info. The taxi fare from any point A to point B within the city costs 3.2 mil. Can a person actually make a decent living doing that? I have an acquaintance who owns and drives a taxi in Villavo. He does all right. But, it is hard to tell, because at age 38 he still lives with his parents.

Just because he lives with his parents doesn't mean he doesn't do all right. Remember, we Colombians are very tight-knit with our families.

To Original comment....First I thought you had to go to Washington to apply for an Overseas Job with the State Dept.and then they select after your test..and also you cannot pick where you want to be sent they will tell you...The salary is low but you don't pay for room and board but the bad part what happens if they want send you to Russia shit that be cold.. You have no other choice..They send you where positions are availble plus on your skills...Forget that...Don't expect to be sent to a paradise..

Taxi shit now Elmo might get shot..working that shift..

Simon, I know Colombians have tight knit families. I wasn't dissing the brotha for shacking up with mom and dad. I just didn't feel it necessary to share that he was a fat, lazy, pig. His sister is a physician, and he went years without even a trivial job ... lived off of mommy and daddy. Guess who bought the taxi? Anyway, my point was I find it impossible by observing him, what kind of living a taxi driver can make there. A little more clear? I don't care if I live in Colombia or the US or Malaysia; if my kid lives at home without a job at age 38 and he is in good health and mentally sound, he is getting an ass beating. But I wouldn't wait until he was 38 to do it.

I saw only two native US citizen employees in my visits to the US embassy. the rest of the employees were colombian.

and I do not see why I would have to speak fluent spanish, the colombian employees barely spoke broken english if they spoke english at all.

wish they would open the consulate in Cali again.

I'd work there if I could.
