Joaquín Villalobos, Salvadoran Guerrillero Comments

An excerpt from an interview with El Pais

so long, david, that i can't even muster an excuse. early on, like twenty years ago, i was so pissed at my wife that she made absolutely no effort to try and learn/speak english...so to say, come half way across the bridge. well it turned into a mexican standoff....i was learning spanish, gladly, and she was veheminantly refusing to make any effort to learn english. well, since i'm one who dislikes war beneith my roof, i just gave in and learned spanish.....she never learned--certainly not considering twenty years have passed--english. so although i'd not consider myself fluent in spanish--having verb tenses down pat--i can be understood by anyone anywhere. her, well she mucks along when forced to use english and realizes that she is the one who has lost out. i can read spanish, pick and poke, but certainly not rapidly.

i never took classes nor studied..i just never made any effort nor took the opportunity to seek out english speaking company in colombia...why? all my associations were and always have been colombian....that is out side of my cyber contact with pbh'ers. some i've met in person, none have i sought out. i know when we get back again, maybe for the holy days, ill have a number of pbh mates to share a drink with and certainly enjoy conversation with, but that is sheer incidence, not design

i worked and lived in so many countries--iran the longest--and never conquered the languages. i was able to speak them enough to get by and do my work, but study them? hardly. for example, amharic in ethopia, the worlds most complex and difficult idiom. i think there's 27 letters and each letter has seven possibilities. learn that? common. so i kept that stand off attitude all the years of travelling and working. it didn't change in colombia.....no classrooms or text books or private lessons. life was my classroom. i wasn't gonna dedicate more years of my life to classrooms, i spent about ten of them there. that's WAY more than enough. who needs a classroom to say 'i love you' or 'thank you' or 'how are you' etc.?

The article's worth taking the time to read if you're learning Spanish anyway. It's a lucid observation about the FARC, Colombia and the left in Latin America. Thanks Atrevido.
