Jews in Colombia

I was sorry to read that the already small Colombian Jewish community is diminishing further:

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/vjw/columbia.html

In my wife's small town in El Valle, there lives an elderly German Jewess who fled Hitler's Germany when she was a child. A touching story.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had anything to with the Jews of Colombia? ,

I met a Jewish-Colombian girl here in New York. She was born in Bogota. Very Americanized though.

My wife's father, last name Ghitis, moved to Colombia from Romania, and married a girl from Popayan. They moved around the country several times, and ended up in Cali. Over 30 years they had 13 children.

What's weird is that with my wife's Latin and Jewish blood, yours truly bargains on merchandise far better.

Your link says there are 4,000 Jews in Colombia. I saw a few backpacking in Bogota and Cartagena. Lots more in Miami.

My best friend during my senior year was a Jewish classmate (with quite a Jewish name). His family was cohen (kohanim), of easter European descent. In Medellín they were involved in the tanning leather business. They were terrific people, but I think they might have left Colombia.

Kalder, very interesting site. I'm wondering how they were able to pin-point the Colombian population to such exact numbers at each point in time. Especially considering many people would abstain from mentioning their religion when not necessary due to antisemitism.

The Marrano link on the page was enlightening. It was naive of me to think Jews would be left alone in less developed countries like Colombia. Seems bigotry knows no bounds. Amazing what Jews have had to put up with for centuries.

I know plenty of Colombian Jews in Bogota. Many of them still seem to observe.

I lived in Stamford Hill for 5 years, close to Golders Green in north london, the home of Hasidic jews, for me an extreme fundalmentalist group, the chosen race, I would not get involved with this unless my experiences and obsevations were seen first hand. Be careful with your questions I have strong opinions

that is why this is my final word on this post, Realy, I have never experienced or witnessed first hand a people that do not listen and will not reason because of their extreme believes not to mention the macho arrogance, the sole reason the women excist is to bear children, totaly shaven, sex is only to reproduce, with holes cut in bed sheets in apropriate places or night gowns. check out the wig shops in north london ( stamford Hill) FIVE years I lived amongst this bizarre but realy scarey existence and my father still does, so with many more strange but true stories I shut this one down, apart from if your ever there ,its close to tottenham, north london UK, how many Volvos are there coming at you with men in long black coats with ringletts of cascading hair dancing below there big black hats, rocking back and forth with the BOOK in their hands chanting while driving there cars, ok its an old phrase but up there in nrte londres , fact is .....................

Rob, I'm pleased to hear that there are still many Jews in Bogota.

I used to live in Britain's premier Jewish neighbourhood (Golders Green, London) and was always struck by what good citizens a lot of them were: Involved in local politics, campaigns, theatre, cultural events etc.

The largest jewish community is in Bogota, but about 40 years ago it was in Barranquilla.

There are of course communities in Medellin and Cali and small groups in other cities.

And if fact the jewish descendants of the first immigrants are coming back to Colombia due to the increase in security conditions.

Someone needs to write one of these about the Jews in Colombia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chanukah_Song

Examples of this high-brow humor:
# Marlon Brando ("Not a Jew at all, but it looks to me like he ate one!" says Sandler, a in-joke at the late actor's obesity)
# Jennifer Connelly (According to Sandler, she is half Jewish, "and I'd like to put some more in her!")
