Jewelery less expensive in Bogota or USA

I wanted to buy my girlfriend a ring. Would it be a better choice to buy the ring in Bogotá or the US? I probably want a gold ring with a small diamond or even moissanite. where do you find reputable jewelers in Bogotá?

My experience is that if you have a good relationship with a jeweler in the US, jewelry with diamonds is generally cheaper, even in Costco. Emeralds, Aquamarine and other stones of the Beryl family are generally cheaper in Colombia and Brazil. Don't know too much about the cost of gold here vs. the US.

Emeralds in Bogotá, diamonds in USA, Israel.

There are many jewelleres in Bogotá. About reputable ones sure there are a lot. It has been a while since I hired one in particular. If I find his address I will let you know. You can look for gems and jewelers near the Emerald Trade Center on avenida Jimenez and carrera 5ta.

You guys are really full of it this time.

Gold in Colombia is about 10% of the price of what it is in the US, and it's higher carat too.

If that was true people who be smuggling Gold from Colombia to the USA-they aren't though.

By and large Jewelry in Colombia is poor value, poor design and not worth buying.

Sam Salmon - could not agree more.

But the general rule of the thumb Diamonds are much cheaper in the U.S. If possible try the Jewelery district in Los Angeles. San Francisco also has great prices. I would guess gold is cheaper in the U.S. but I have no clue.

Sam Salmon - I beg to differ. I love the design of the emeralds I purchsed in Bogota. The setting is unusual for the necklace. The earrings are set in heavy 18k posts. I like knowing that I probably won't see these items on anyone in the U.S. I get a lot of compliments on both.

EVERY last Colombian I know who wants to buy something gold goes down to Colombia to do it. Ditto for anybody from The Middle East or anywhere else in Latin America.

But whatever, you guys can overpay as much as you want. Just stop telling other people here bullshit!

I smuggle some gold on almost every trip. Go in with no jewelry and just wear it back! You should educate yourself in advance though.

Dude, this isn't gold ingots we are talking about here, it's JEWELRY! Wake up and smell the perico!

And FYI the rate for buying and selling dollars in Colombia is NOT the market rate either.

You think you know about things here but you know shit!

No wonder you live in Suba. It suits you!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

There is an emerald district somewhere downtown.

And Suba is a shithole.

I think that part of the understanding of prices of fine jewelery in the US vs Colombia has to do with the advertising practices used in the US. Has anyone ever wondered why all of the jewelery is always on sale and even when it isn't the clerk has to do some kind of calculation to tell you how much it costs. You are paying more for hype than you are paying for the gold.

By the way, if you know what you want and what you are lookig at; try the compra ventas. Sometimes you'll find lots of good stuff there at reasonable prices. And they will bargain on the price.

That glass house thing comes to mind. I believe the author of the comment above spent much of his life in Winnipeg, Canada and The Bronx, USA.

;-)

On a more productive note, an ounce of gold is pretty much the same price anywhere in the world. The primary advantage Colombia might have is cheap labor in the manufacturing process. Still, I doubt they have a bigger jewelry manufacturing sector or larger retail markets than can be found in the Middle East, esp. in the Gulf states.

I don´t know if you would call it a jelwery district but you will find many shops and buliding with gems, gold and jelwery. sobre las Calles 11 y 12 y la Carrera 6

And yes you would fine a row of them.

Now you will see some high quality emeralds in downtown Bogotá, but the best ones are not in sight for the regular buyer.

You sure would fine high quality jelwers in Colombia, but you would need to look around.

La_Huella says on Nov 11, 2008, 08:42:

It's DIRT cheap in the gulf states or in Hong Kong or Bangkok. It all has to do with the labor, which does make a huge difference in the price. But hey, misinformation is what this site is all about, why stop now??

The Bronx is actually quite nice. 24% of it is parks. Most people don't know that, even if they live there. Suba on the other hand makes Ciudad Bolivar look nice.

OK now.... Gratamira is different. That's amusing you said Suba instead of Gratamira. Gratamira is REAL ritzy, and it's TECHNICALLY part of the alcaldía menor de Suba, but then again so is everything north of calle 80 and west of Av Suba.

La_Huella says on Nov 11, 2008, 17:39:

Yeah I know exactly where that is, friends live there.

I'm having a great chuckle here, saying you live in Suba when you live in Gratamira is like saying you live in the Valley when you live in Beverly Hills. :P
