The lunch court is the only place i saw people milling around, but that was only during lunch hour. I don't know about Adino in Bogota, i recall it had decent traffic in the store or was that on a weekend?

That's a complex question You have to remember though there is almost no such thing as somebody with roots from PR who HASNT spent lots of time in NYC. They get that free pass with immigration which makes ALL the difference.
If you go down to PR, every second person was born uptown or in the Bronx somewhere.

I make it a point to smile all the time and be friendly to tourists and to pople when I'm in a foreign country so they can see how nice Canadians are....we're all nice. :-P

A friend of mine is married to an NYer of Italian heritage, and although the initial shock of loudness, blunt remarks, and lack of ps and qs was considerable, he is a kind and caring person. Little nicities are so ingrained in me that my instinct reacts negatively when they are missing, but I have to consider what is the norm for whomever I am talking with, and that takes precidence.

I think that along with clumping that happens in large ethnic communities, there is often the evolution of a defensive/offensive attitude. In teens it can be the I'm-too-cool-I'm-intimidating-leave-me-along, coz-if-I-can-intimidate-you, you-sure-as-hell-won't-mess-with-me. It may have started in response to real or percieved predjudices when the community was young, but as more people come into the community, they take their cues from those already there and that becomes the way to be and part of the culture.

Jennifer was always a bit arrogant and conceited. So when she talks about her people on "the block", that's strange because my friend says she spend most of her days inside the house with her family or banging- ooops!- I mean practicing with her dance teacher.
