Jajaja- Man offers my girlfriend and I a taxi ride to Bogota from Melgar for $5

C'mon criminals! Get with it!

If you're going to try and either kidnap me for ransom or cut my throat for my backpack full of dirty clothes atleast come up with some better bait than offering a taxi ride 1/2 the price of a bus ride. Just thought I would share that.

Advice to gringos visiting Melgar- Just take the bus.

I fail to see the humor. He could have pulled out a gun and said "get in or your girl dies where she stands, you would have had little choice but to get in which means your girl was going to be raped and you WERE going to die. Life has little value here, make no mistake about it.

That's common in Villao. Taxis from Bogota will drop their passengers in Villao and then pick up fares at a deep discount to make some extra money on the drive back to the big city.

Yes, but most don't understand HOW LITTLE VALUE it has.

That being said, it could have been a guy needing a return trip to the area ? So, if you feel a need to help folks then either take the ride and leave a tip or give him 5 mil.

Folks deserve a living and if you don't help,, then who will?

Probably saw your backback full of dirty clothes and thought five bucks was all you could afford.

Last year, I was traveling with the misses from Manizales to Medellin and when we got to the bus terminal a taxi driver offered us a discount rate to Medellin. Much better than the bus. But there were 4 of us in the taxi. We were a tad bit less comfortable, paid a whole lot less and arrived there faster.

As we sat in the front seat of the bus waiting for it to fill up, we watched the man who offered us the ride walk around offering nobody else a ride. We sat in the bus for atleast 30 minutes and the man was still there just hanging out. There was also no sign of a taxi. Have you ever been face-to-face with someone that you just knew was up to no good? Well this was definately the case here. Of course I could be wrong about that, but just stating what I felt at the time. Better safe than sorry.

"Better safe than sorry." Always a good modus operandi in Colombia, or anywhere, for that matter.
