This had been mentioned before, but I haven't seen any specifics. How do you get the money back? Does it apply to merchandise purchases only or do transportation, hotel and restaurant purchases count as well?

I did this in Argentina at the airport but had to show receipts and they would post the credit back to my credit card....

Where are the details on this...do you have to show your passport at the airport with a tourist visa or another office or at the point of sale...?????

Government refunded VAT to buy foreign tourists in Colombia

Bogota, August 14, 2008 .- The announcement was made by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Luis Guillermo Plata, who explained that the issue was already regulated by Decree 2925 August 2008, and that blanket purchases clothing, shoes, perfumes, leather goods, CDs, crafts, liquor, food for human consumption, toys, jewelry and handmade Colombian emeralds.

"This measure takes on great importance in the challenge we have set ourselves substantially increase visits by foreigners to the country. This is more than an incentive, coupled with the security they can breathe today and countless cultural and tourist attractions that have Colombia, will influence the decision of many tourists choose as a destination, "said the minister.

He explained that, on average, a foreign tourist spends U.S. $ 1,000 in Colombia, an amount that exceeds the world average is at $ 800, calculated on an average stay of 4.5 days. Hence the importance of not relent in our endeavour to give more strength to this activity, he said.

For his part, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Oscar Garcia Rueda, explained that foreign visitors, with only prove their nationality, through the passport entry or residence permit issued by the Administrative Department of Security-DAS, or any immigration card another paper, may attend, bills in hand, to the point of the DIAN at international airports, to process the application for refund of VAT.

The decree allows the identification of tourists, as a condition of returning, not only the passport, but also the national identity card in cases where it is valid to enter the country (Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil) .

In a term not exceeding three months, counted from the request, foreign visitors will receive such return in their home countries, paid to the respective credit card with which they were acquired property. He clarified that the minimum purchase to obtain a refund should be $ 176 thousand today (excluding VAT) and the maximum amount of VAT which will be returned to a traveler will be the order of two million one hundred thousand pesos, approximately.
