I am thinking of buying a new car which of course includes 20% IVA in the purchase price. As a tourist on a tourist visa I am aware of the new law which will refund the IVA when leaving the country to those visiting on a tourist visa. I never bothered with this in the past however now I am interested in learning about this law. Any information would be appreciated. Larry

Gator says on Nov 9, 2008, 14:50: Only certain items are exempt and the $$$$ is refunded at the airport.Purchases include clothing, shoes, perfumes, leather goods, CD's, liquor, food, toys, jewelry from Colombia and handmade traditional arts and crafts.Colombian emeralds et. al. To qualify for IVA, you have to buy 10 units of the same item. If it is less than 10 items, it doesn't apply. Hotel and restaurant tax is Not included. You can NOT be a dual citizen or a permanent resident. The paperwork is so massive and you have to wait three or four months. I doubt a dealer would sell you a car if you were not a citizen or a resident with a cédula. I think you would have problems acquiring the basic required insurance and with internal registration. Decreto 2925 effective 11 August 2008 covers this rebate "Credidi pretio parvo emere et magno vendere tibi in animo fuisse!" . 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
