It's hard to flip

Living in a predominate Spanish speaking society, I had to learn to speak and think in Spanish. I write a lot in English, but rarley get to talk. Now on the rare occasion that I have to talk in English, I'm all screwed up.

Funny, I understand this all too well. I studied French for 10 - 12 years and was pretty fluent. I have been learning Spanish formally for the past year and informally for a while before that. This July, I met a gentleman at El Dorado who also spoke French and we started to talk. Every sentence that I tried ended up being mostly Spanish. I can't believe that I once spoke French fairly well.

My wife is really bilingual, a native Colombiana married for nearly 20 years to a gringo. We speak mainly English at home, but she speaks Spanish with the rest of the world. She reports that she has lost words in BOTH languages.

I've spent enough time in Colombia at one time that when i was in the US talking to friends, I would end up saying a few words in Spanish and not even realize until I saw the strange looks on my friends face..jajaja...
I also had a Dutch teacher once in High School and she said she had been speaking English for so long that she pretty much forgot how to speak Dutch. She almost has to relearn when she visits family in Europe.

I had been living away from Finland for five, six years without even hearing much less speaking my native language when I suddenly got a visitor from Finland ringing my doorbell in Cali. It must've been one of the most embarrassing moments of my life: the words just refused to come out of my mouth; I thought I was using Finnish words, but I was talking Spanish, I was totally confused. These people were a Finnish family that had moved to Cali due to husband's two-year expat job in building a new extension to the local paper mill. We met often after that and became good friends and my Finnish returned too, slowly but surely, from the deepest places in my brain.

I don't flip easily either; it takes me a while to get my brain geared in the right language when speaking several in a group.

Cheers,
Desi

Leeroy says on Sep 30, 2007, 13:25:

I am in the lucky position of speaking almost precisely a 50/50 mix between Spanish and English in my life at the moment. English at work with my classes, English with the other English-speaking teachers - and Spanish with everyone else.

While I am not forgetting English (I teach it - which makes it hard to forget) I find that some words from Spanish do not translate well. Or, rather, they do not translate easily. Thus, I might occasionally pepper my English with Spanish words when necessary. I wouldn't say I live on "Carrerra nineteen", for example (or even "road nineteen") - it just sounds silly. It's "Carrera diez y nueve" - even in the middle of an English-language conversation.

Similarly, I have been known to say

"Nah, you can just get domicilio"
"You shouldn't dar papaya"
"It's like, me da pena man, you know what I mean?"

What I have found is that Spanish "pushed out" what Indonesian I had.

Since I speak Spanish exclusively with my wife and only from time to time with other people, some habits have a way of butting in. When I talk to my wife, every other phase is a "mi amor". It's like frigging punctuation. I was talking to some chick at a party where everyone spoke Spanish and a "mi amor" snuck in. Damm, her eyes got big and we both chuckled about it.
