its great not being able to speak spanish

When i have to go to Colombia and speak to my wife's family I feel so happy that I cant understand a word they say. I also think it's great they cant understand anything I say to my wife.
All I can say is if you are married to a Colombian never learn Spanish and life is so simple and you will never have problems with the family. It is almost as if everyone has agreed to just say the occasional sentence with the help of my wife. If they feel bad about something I have done then I dont have to talk about it. Pure simplicity what more could anyone want. There is nothing worse than family memmbers telling you how to live your life where to go what to do. It is much better if they belt up and so do you

It is better that way, at least in your case you won't have to know what the family thinks of you.

In YOUR case, Kerry, it is definitely better that you cannot understand Spanish. Que pendejo.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Sometimes i PRETEND not to understand Spanish, like when the football's on and i'm asked to do some chore or other: 'oh sorry, i didn't catch that, i thought you said get yourself another cold one from the kitchen and relax' !!!

Pretending is great, but my wife has caught on to it: "Eso, hagase el gringo!" she tells me. But as far as in public it is definetly nice sometimes to pretend you are oblivous when you know exactly what they are saying. It is easy for me with my long blonde hair to get away with. As far as pure simplicity goes I feel a little safer knowing what is going on around me.

off the hook When i have to go to Colombia and speak to my wife's family..."

This sentence says it all. The fact that you have relocated your wife and the fact that she probably speaks decent English and the fact that you probably visit CO about twice a year for a week at time sort of lets you off the hook in regards to having to learn her language. Of course you could have gone one better and detered your wife from increasing her proficiency in English - then you'd really never have to answer to anyone - "no comprendo corozon"

Wow You are the same person that was asking how to help so your mother in law wouldnt get a visa.

You are one of the most selfish people I've heard about... I am really sorry for your wife... and for you.
