items confisgated from mail

Does anyone know why things would be confinsgated from your mail being sent from bogota to the us, not that it was even important but my boyfriend sent me a package with a letter a movie and a belly button ring(onside a small ziploc bag) when i recieved the package it had been opened already (obviously) and the small bag was inside but no belly button ring. not that this is vcery important but i was planning on sending a ring in the mail to him, is this not a good idea, not an expensive ring just an engraved siver band. Is it banned i mean obvioslly my package was opened then resealed, was this just an "accident" preformed by someone along the way, and clues would be awesome

No accident Its no accident. I sent my girlfriend a package from Canada for Christmas and it was full of a bunch of expensive stuff and the package arrived to her unopened and everything was in there (including some gold and diamond jewellry). But, she sent me a package from Colombia to Canada with just a couple of small inexpensive items and the package was ripped open and gone through by someone. Fortunately nothing was taken but its probably because there was nothing really valuable in there. I guess all the packages leaving Colombia must be opened automatically either by the customs people or snoopy workers looking for something valuable. Watch out for anything you send out of the country from Colombia.

sending into Colombia I have sent twice a package to Colombia

1st time to a girlfriend in Bogota : package address was her working address. package arrived, never opened everything OK

2nd time to a girlfriend in Cali : package address was her private home address. Package never arrived ;-)

Both times I used regular public postal/mail system, so no express mail or specially secured private/mail delivery company.

I wont send any packages anymore to private addresses, corporate addresses seem fine as those in charge of "handling" the packages will not be tempted very easy to open those. Just make sure the company name is on the package. and underneath put the name of the person that has to get the package. ;-)

Otherwise use Federal Express, United Parcel Services, DHL, or whatever : but pay the price !

I dont know IF "they" (customs-shippers-handlers inside Colombia) will open those packages (send through Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, ...). The chances are more low, compared to public service mail system employees. Also in regards of custom handling. Using a private mail system is either working for them and obeying to corporate rules, or getting fired. Also psychologically : customs have a bigger time in loosing face and credibility towards a company compared to a private person receiving a package. ;-)
In any case I would never send jewelry, quiet expensive or special value items through any mailing system towards Colombia. The temptations makes the thiefs.

Concerning sendings out of colombia I have no clue ???? I think a private mailing system would be the best option. and again send it to a private company address.

I am so devastating !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did send a letter to my sister with personal information, she never got the letter but problems.

They openned the letter and they are using my personal bank ifnormation and took a 1000 bucks out from my account here in USA.
I went to USPS and they said cannot help me.
Does any one knows who or which company received the regular mail sent out from USA to Bogota?

The police cannot help either because they need to know who did received the document in Bogota?

Please help

Package opened, nothing missing People should remember that Colombian customs (and the customs of all other countries on earth) have the legal right to open your packages.

If you send anything to a foriegn country, someone you don't know has the legal right to open the package and have him or herself a good look-see. As far as other people stealing stuff... don't send valuables in the mail unless you can insure them through the courier.
