PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post

It appears that the El Pais thinks the U.S. Government has voted Cali the most dangerous city in Colombia.

Here is the link

I read the State Department report and couldn{t find where it said Cali was the most dangerous.
It simply said that other cities in Colombia are less dangerous than before but that Cali is still dangerous.

Read the artical but the comments on the bottom are priceless. People are all over the road on this one including the people that live in Cali. hehehe !!!

funny enough I read an article which said that Kingston was the most dangerous city in the world, they have to make up their minds.

Danger can be measured many different ways. I don't profess to know it (danger in Cali) in personal terms but Cali would be a dangerous place to operate any business of SCALE as the unions are more militant there with fractions of mafia and guerilla embedded in their controlling members. Just look back at some of the labor unrest demostrations and actions that have taken place in Cali. Even the military has had to become involved to bring the unlawful actions back from the brink.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has been committed to bringing some of the more militant Cali unions under control using (if necessary) the military. Things are better today than they were a few years ago (before Uribe came into power). Bombs and bloodshed were just tools of the trade used by some of these groups.

Even in Medellin I have seen violence used to press union demands. Like the president of a large Colombian corporation (with labor unrest) wife was targeted by criminals shooting up her car with automotic weapon fire just outside her home. There were not trying to kill her as they could have done that with one shot but rather get their message accross.

i don't understand how people can say Cali is more dangerous than any other city in Colombia....what are you measuring this against?
Cali is my 2nd city in Colombia. I have lived there and I visit every time I'm in Colombia, have friends, family and a fiancee waiting for me there. Never had a problem there, and I've been to different parts of Cali at different times of day. I've never really had a major problem anywhere else in Colombia.

This is probably... ...a mistake on my part to share this personal bit of information. The people involved may still be in some danger.

My wife's niece was a plastic surgeon in Cali. She is now living somewhere in the U.S. She was provided asylum by the U.S.government after she was repeatedly threatened by the Mafia/cartel/Guerrilla. The final blow came when there was an attempt to kidnap her child.

So perhaps danger is relative for each person. It does, however, exist in Cali.
