I am just curious to hear opinions regarding the independence of San Andrés. The natives that I spoke with told me that they wanted to break away from Colombia (and keep away from Nicaragua) and make a go of it on their own. One man suggested they would be better off to partner up with Jamacia perhaps. My Colombian friends seem to think they wouldn't be able to do so. I found it interesting that the natives of the island speak English...

kalder says on Mar 3, 2007, 16:23: San Andrés was a British possession until the 1790s. Many of its inhabitants are descended from slaves brought over from Jamaica to work the cane fields. Hence their speaking English. "kalder- have you ever had a woman?"--Sam Salmon 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

utopiacowboy says on Mar 3, 2007, 16:34: Colombians are the late arrivals to the islands and now constitute 50% of the population. The natives speak English and resent the Colombians greatly. Colombia would never allow them self-determination. In any event there are so many non-native Colombians living there now that the whole thing is pointless. It's like Hawaii to the US - how likely would native Hawaiians achieve independence? Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
