Isla San Andrés - ¿Independence?

I am just curious to hear opinions regarding the independence of San Andrés. The natives that I spoke with told me that they wanted to break away from Colombia (and keep away from Nicaragua) and make a go of it on their own. One man suggested they would be better off to partner up with Jamacia perhaps. My Colombian friends seem to think they wouldn't be able to do so. I found it interesting that the natives of the island speak English...

If they want to starve to death, sure let them do it.

Do you find it curious that the 'natives' of Miami speak Spanish?

San Andrés was a British possession until the 1790s. Many of its inhabitants are descended from slaves brought over from Jamaica to work the cane fields. Hence their speaking English.

Colombians are the late arrivals to the islands and now constitute 50% of the population. The natives speak English and resent the Colombians greatly. Colombia would never allow them self-determination. In any event there are so many non-native Colombians living there now that the whole thing is pointless. It's like Hawaii to the US - how likely would native Hawaiians achieve independence?

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

San Andres, Colombia San Andres natives are happy as they are. As in every society there are one or two who are unhappy so they want to start a propaganda campaign as the other dude.

Is it true? That tourist even Colombians can not reside in San Adres more than 4 months in one year?.
One of my brothers has a cabin there and I wanted to live there for a while, and he just went back home to Medellin after a month vacation from there and said that you can not visit more that 4 months of a year?. Does anyone know about this???
this has nothing to do with this post, just my question.

Feliz Navidad!

as one who has been there.. a million times,..
oldbongo knows three generations of islanders, and for sure, they have always hated the colombian migrants who come there and buy up the locals land. all the islanders have historic connections in panama, grand cayman, costa rica, and nicaragua, because that's where their men have gone to seafaring work. come the colombians, with their waves of immigration, and their basuco, and the place is transformed, into as UC said, a mickey mouse hawaii.
on providence, the animosity is much more pointed.
first thing you see,...a sign,....we speak english.
how do you think those peaceful, pastoral, laid-back folks feel when they are confronted by a bunch of spanish policemen looking to enforce colombian "authority"....i'll tell you...angry, contemptuous,
rebellious, and in the end forlorn, as nothing will change for the better for the islanders as long as there is status quo.
as to independance,..not gonna happen.
