I made an account on Amigos.com to meet a few people from Colombia before I moved there and so I could practice my Spanish by emailing back and forth. So far, I've had two girls offer to show me all around Bogota once I arrive. They have made this offer after one or two emails. This seems quite up front to me but maybe it's normal for Colombians?
I haven't said anything about my career or anything either. I just mentioned that I'm moving from Canada to Colombia this fall and that I want to meet people there before I make the move.
Can I trust these girls and take them up on their offer to show me around or should I be worried?

Don't get me wrong, it has a lot to offer and the majority of people are really nice you just have to keep your eyes WIDE open.

miamimike says on Aug 17, 2007, 10:44: Hey Duca--if you take them up on the Deal, whatever you do don't let them recommend the Restaurant. Better you pick one a rather plain Eatery because what will invariably happen is Your Guide will pick an expensive classy restaurant and most CERTAINLY will order the most Expensive Dish on the Menu. Pick a simple eatery, check out the menu beofre you sit down for prices and figure your Guide will order the most $$$ Meal served. If you can handle that, PAYING FOR THE HIGHEST PRICED MEAL, OK, if not, go to a nice coffee shop where for sure it won't cost an arm and Leg. Believe me this Scam happens daily in Col with Gringos. Also if she wants to bring a friend or family member along, put a Lid on that idea also as you will end up with the Tab for all the hanger-ons.Do your due dilegence,,Caveat Emptor,,, "Wait a minute. ducaticole says on Aug 17, 2007, 16:25: The one girl is an engineering student and her english is quite good so I've been enjoying talking to her quite a bit. She definately seems like someone who could be trusted. The other girl hasn't said too much about herself but the language barrier is in the way there I think. My Spanish is pretty bad so she's probably trying her best to understand what I'm writing to her.

She told me it was her friend's boyfriend. After he went to court, I went back for the $500 bail money and kept it. She was mad. Thats a free flight to Colombia...lol

morphus says on Aug 21, 2007, 16:14: Really? I know another Peruvian girl here. She was living rich in Lima. Her family was sending her money from the U.S. She said she was very mean to poor people in Peru. Now she's living here in the U.S. with her family. She having trouble learning English and works part time cleaning offices. She said she changed a lot since she came to the U.S. and is a nicer person.
