Is this normal?

I made an account on Amigos.com to meet a few people from Colombia before I moved there and so I could practice my Spanish by emailing back and forth. So far, I've had two girls offer to show me all around Bogota once I arrive. They have made this offer after one or two emails. This seems quite up front to me but maybe it's normal for Colombians?

I haven't said anything about my career or anything either. I just mentioned that I'm moving from Canada to Colombia this fall and that I want to meet people there before I make the move.

Can I trust these girls and take them up on their offer to show me around or should I be worried?

Are you going to be getting the jungle tour as well? You can get an all-inclusive package from a charter tour operator known as the FARC. They've got some hot babes to show you around too.

goin_south says on Aug 16, 2007, 21:39:

send me their addresses/photos;
I'll be happy to screen them for ya.
there's an easy way to tell if they are genuine or not.

The first time I went to Cali. I met a friend on Amigos.com before I went. Things turned out just great. If you know what I mean. Check it out! You might be surprised. LOL

Yes normal and safe. Go for it.

Amigos.com has been recommended before on poorbuthappy. I tried it without attaching a photo which is supposed to be death and still succeded (don't know how to attach a photo!).

Hey, I did exactly that not more than 1 month ago (met someone online, she offered me to show me around. She even found me a place to stay for free!) Possibly had the 10 most amazing days of my life... I say go for it!

Ouch..hahaha I would be worried if I were you. How funny is this, I was born in this beautiful Country but I just do not trust what goes around here. Don't get me wrong, it has a lot to offer and the majority of people are really nice you just have to keep your eyes WIDE open.

I would be very careful if I were you. I've been living here 4 months already and things could get bad if you're too trusting.

Cheers and enjoy your stay.

Once those girls hear the MAGIC WORD "USA" but canada will do, you should have about a dozen.

Hey Duca--if you take them up on the Deal, whatever you do don't let them recommend the Restaurant. Better you pick one a rather plain Eatery because what will invariably happen is Your Guide will pick an expensive classy restaurant and most CERTAINLY will order the most Expensive Dish on the Menu. Pick a simple eatery, check out the menu beofre you sit down for prices and figure your Guide will order the most $$$ Meal served. If you can handle that, PAYING FOR THE HIGHEST PRICED MEAL, OK, if not, go to a nice coffee shop where for sure it won't cost an arm and Leg. Believe me this Scam happens daily in Col with Gringos. Also if she wants to bring a friend or family member along, put a Lid on that idea also as you will end up with the Tab for all the hanger-ons.Do your due dilegence,,Caveat Emptor,,,

It's pretty common for Colombians to bring a friend along when they meet someone, they're social people. Remember, it's the same for them - they're meeting someone they don't know, so bringing a friend can feel safer.

The one girl is an engineering student and her english is quite good so I've been enjoying talking to her quite a bit. She definately seems like someone who could be trusted. The other girl hasn't said too much about herself but the language barrier is in the way there I think. My Spanish is pretty bad so she's probably trying her best to understand what I'm writing to her.

GIB- a Col Lady I invited out in Miami for Drinks invited her Brother&Sister-in -Law Along, unbeknownst to me, on our first night out. These two uninvitees drank soaked up Aguardiente like a Sponge(one Bottle) and when it was time to pay up, I payed for the My Drink and for the lady I invited. I told the waiter before on the side, "Seperate Checks Please" so when the other 2 "uninviteds" received their Tab, they scrambled for Money furiously, I stood at the Door to the Taberna looking on in Amusement as I gathered from their Hand Gyrations, they were set to Wash Dishes in payment for their Drinks. Somehow they came up with the Dough, next Bar We went to, they had the drill down pat and that's make sure who is paying for your Drinks before you throw 'em down. Isn't that what most Prudent Folks do with their Bills and Finances, like know what what you can afford before you Order??

Good Job...Damn I wish I was there...To be honest I would of paid the tab and then would it made it clear to my date ...Doesn't work this way...if she is happy for another date thats great but if she was only there to soak up some drinks with her friends and have you pay the tab she knows it won't go again and she says nah was nice but no more dates...Then you know and ends there...and is a small loss..

After he went to court, I went back for the $500 bail money and kept it. She was mad. Thats a free flight to Colombia...lol

Really? I know another Peruvian girl here. She was living rich in Lima. Her family was sending her money from the U.S. She said she was very mean to poor people in Peru. Now she's living here in the U.S. with her family. She having trouble learning English and works part time cleaning offices. She said she changed a lot since she came to the U.S. and is a nicer person.
