Colombia rebels kill at least 15 police
Associated Press
BOGOTA, Colombia - Hundreds of leftist rebels bombarded a remote police station with makeshift mortars during a six-hour attack in northern Colombia Wednesday, killing at least 15 officers, authorities said.
The attack on the police station in the village of Tierradentro, 230 miles northwest of Bogota, was the bloodiest since President Alvaro Uribe was re-elected in May in a landslide that endorsed his get-tough policy with the rebels.
"The latest report I have is that there are 15 dead police, between 10 and 12 missing police and four civilians injured," said Jairo Lopez, the top security official for Cordoba state, where the attack occurred. "There were approximately 450 guerrillas."
Lopez blamed the attack on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as the FARC. It came two weeks after Uribe called off talks with the FARC over a possible prisoner swap, blaming the rebels for a car bomb that injured 23 at a military base in Bogota.

utopiacowboy says on Nov 2, 2006, 09:53: This is in the southern mountainous part of Cordoba which is surrounded by Antioquia. This part of Cordoba has always been a disputed area. Here is the article from El Meridiano which includes a map showing the location: http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com/jueves/JUDICIAL/JUDICIAL.HTM Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. |

juancegomez says on Nov 2, 2006, 10:37: Tinto and UC It's been a disputed one, yes, but in general the dispute seemed to be settling in favor of the paramilitaries, strategically if not always locally, so it's not that much of a leap to say that yes, this is going to piss them off.

juancegomez says on Nov 2, 2006, 12:38: cali373 Maybe, who knows, perhaps other problems would persist because those aren't the only elements I'd list, but I'd prefer to set realistic goals.

Sr Tertius says on Nov 2, 2006, 13:20: cali "if you remove the FARC,ELN,AUC, colombian military, government, the oligarchy, and any U.S. influence" ... Colombia would be largely empty... I don't know if that is good or bad, though. I side with juancegomez on this: I think that these elements are constitutive of Colombia (ok, maybe not the US influence) and we have to deal with them. Sr Tertius says on Nov 2, 2006, 13:44: Paramilitaries in Cordoba Seems to me that the influence of the paramilitaries in the departmental government of Cordoba was first evidenced when the department changed its name from CordoVa (which refers to General Jose Maria Cordova, who appears in the coat of arms of the department) to CordoBa. My guess is that someone thought the name was mispelled. Only the paracos would do something as atrocious as that. Does anyone know this incident in better detail? Maybe your wife, UC? juancegomez says on Nov 2, 2006, 15:52: Sr Tertius I don't know if you're serious about that, but I wouldn't know.

utopiacowboy says on Nov 2, 2006, 19:14: I did ask my wife about this and her answer is typical. She said it was changed by a governor whose name she could not remember but who had a homosexual son. It was within the last 25 years while she was living in Medellin. She says many people continue spelling the name as Cordova.
