Is there much saturated fat in a bandeja paisa?

II am just about to go to Colombia and I usually enjoy some Colombian food, such as bandeja paisa.
However my doctor has said I must avoid too much saturated fat due to very high cholesterol levels.
Do you think that means that I must avoid this dish, or would one or two per week be OK?
Thanks

Its fine because they mostly fry in Canola oil!

Ok thanks I'll go easy on this dish then. In our own places they seem to be quite into healthy eating now so it's only really in the cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Zapatoca, Cartagena and Santa Marta that it is an issue, and most of the time I will be in the country.

I've just assumed looking at most colombian foods that they were probably pretty bad for you, but it's one of those things that when people walk alot and whatnot, they don't collect it like we in north america do.

No matter where you go, the Korean tour bus isn't far behind.

No, I probably would have made an abnoxious comment and then retracted my statement by saying DUH "Of Course it does" ji ji lol

Eat the healthy part of the bandeja, the beans. To me it's the best part. Beans have lots of fiber, lower cholesterol and have plenty of antioxidants. Hispanics across many cultures eat lots of beans. It's inferred that hispanics in the US have lower rates of some cancer like colon, rectal and breast because of eating beans a lot more than other ethnicities.

This kind of diet has been a standard for Colombians for the last two hundred years, compare the disease rate of Colombia and the US and see wich one fails the test. could diet make the difference?

All truth goes through three phases. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self evident.

Or exercise perhaps? I eat as much as I like and drink as much beer as I like when there and lose a lot of weight every time I go for a month or two. I chalk it up to the altitude (less oxygen equals less apetite) and much more walking.

I remember what my great aunt used to do to our bandejas paisas when I lived in Colombia. She would fry EVERYTHING, even the beef and the arepa. THEN, she would take a few tablespoons of the grease that was leftover after frying everything in it, and put it in the beans for more "flavor". God, I get nauseous just thinking about it.

I bet that if you let a bandeja paisa in the fridge overnight it'd be covered in cold white grease the next day, from the arepa to the beef. Barf! =S

I thought about you guys saying that when I made my husband a sancocho this past Sunday. I put in the chicken, then added potatoes, yuca, plantain and corn. I kept thinking "Long live the carbohydrate carnival!" Geez.

Ok thank you for all your advice. I am not a troll and I knew that this dish had a lot of saturated fat. I'll try to limit it to one or two. I am leaving for Colombia in a few hours. So we can close this thread, take care everyone.

Try the soups...they're usually quite good and not as fatty as other "typical" dishes. Also, don't drink the soda, but instead fruit juices, preferably in water. Remember that even though Colombia food could be considered fatty, it usually is fresher and what would be considered "organic" in the USA. If you eat meat, try to stick to fish and beef. The beef is a lot healthier than what'd you eat here, especially since it was from a cow probably killed that very morning!
