Is is Safe to Visit... New York City?????????? What does "American" have to do with it?
All in all, yes! BUT, like many cities in the USA there are areas that you enter and may not return.

It depends on what your idea of Safe is? If you think someone picking your pocket or robbing you in the street with a knife makes a place extremely dangerous then you won't feel safe here. If it is the first place you've ever visited you may also feel unsafe. If you´ve visited other Sth American cities or Asian cities you will find that Bogota feels alot safer than many.

many foriegners live in Bogota some in safer areas than others. Your safety will depend on where you stay and where you visit.

But all in all many Gringos travel Colombia each year with no problems.

for wise folks, it's safe (american or not) for dummies, it's deadly.

treat it like a crap shoot and go for it.

it's sort of reality check on where you're at.

ask GIB, he'll give you the inside info. and don't forget what elmos says...trust elmo, always.

If you are ready to die, Bogotá is safe.... Any day of the week, in any part of Bogotá this can happen.
At least six killed in Bogotá car bombing

By the way, this does NOT happen in major USA cities. And I don't have time to look up the kidnapping statistics but I'm pretty sure New York City is a hell of a lot safer than Bogotá when it comes to the number of politically inspired kidnappings.

Oh, yeah, traditionally in the United States presidential inaugurations are not shelled by mortar attacks that kill 13 people, as happened in Bogotá.

But the chances anything will happen to you are so infinitely small that you need not worry, especially if you spend a lot of time meeting hot women in Bogota's bookstores.

Go, and enjoy Bogotá!

Cali or bust.... It sounds like Bogota is pretty unsafe.

I have been traveling to Cali for ten years and have never had a problem. But then again I'm not your average tourist.

To tell you the truth I'm a little tired of hearing about what colombians might do to an american. What about all the things a rotten gringo might do to a poor little colombiano. I don't know any personally but I'm sure that there are scum bag gringos that beat, rob and kill colombianos with little fear of getting caught. I've heard tale that some of those gringo bastards even steal their women.

Do the research Read EL TIEMPO daily, listen to Caracol Radio online or read their website, and go through the posts here, then make up your own mind.

sounds like a stupid question, although I thought there is no stupid question.
Firstly Colombians are also Americans.
So, do you mean: is Bogota safe for Colombians?

Secondly the Colombia and Safety issue had been discussed a lot here in the forum. Use the search function and you find loads of comments.

remember to hold GIBs hand when crossing the road You've got more chance of getting killed by a car in Bogota than anything else.

Make sure you have a spring in your step, mainly so you can jump the 12 inch high curbs once you do make it across the street in one piece.

GIB, your story about pothole covers and transformers... Reminds me of the time we were hiking in Cauca and when we came to the place to cross the bridge...surprise! The bridge wasn't there. The bridge had been stolen by the FARC. It wasn't a big bridge and it was a pontoon type bridge, but I just never imagined someone would steal a bridge. They just took it apart and carried off the pieces. SOB's!

Another time in Medellín someone stole a big (huge!) roll of telephone wire. Maybe that's why it took me four years to get a telephone in Medellín.

Like you say, there's never a dull moment in Colombia.

And I agree with you...if you stay on your toes your chances of getting into trouble are very small, in spite of the poster above who talked about bombings and mortar shells in Bogota. That stuff just doesn't happen every day.

they autta saw off the parking meters in poblado... the invent of that bit of wisdom was the death of old poblado. and old poblado was sooooooo cool. way before lleras and all the bars and clubs. just the casa de los cinco puertos and lots of cool people that lived all around and parties that never stopped. i felt like i had died and gone to heaven when i found myself in medellin. little did i know i'd spend the next two and a half years.

then marry, then more kids, then all the stuff that couples go through then, then, then now it's 15 goin on 17 years later and mom and i are just older, a bit wiser, and a whole lot easier on each other..

peace...
