Is "gringo" rude?

I have a friend, a white guy in his 30s, that asked me to get him this t-shirt he saw. Its a green shirt with "gringo" in big white letters. I think its funny but I would like to know if I should not be seen in public with him while he's wearing it. : ) It doesn't matter what the white american population thinks. I need to know what the hispanic population will think of this.

..... I think there is a band called gringo. I believe that is why the shirts exist in the first place.

My boyfriend uses it as a term of endearment and calls me his little gringa.

last time i was in miami, outside a wal-mart, there was a long bearded old guy, with a t-shirt that said in big letters "100% REDNECK" i thought it was funny as hell. I want one that says "100% CORRONCHO"

I'll get there, when I get there!

No problems.. but it took me a year to find out "perro gringo" was NOT Spanish for I love you.

The relatives, especially El Coronel, always ask, "Where's the gringo," when we come through the front door.

"Credidi pretio parvo emere et magno vendere tibi in animo fuisse!" .

I'm not even gringo (if the term is really applied to North Americans) but the name is so catchy I nemed my website gringoincolombia.com

Actually my wife named it. All the catchy names I came up with were already taken.

Information This is what the Dictionary says:

Offensive Slang.
Used as a disparaging term for a foreigner in Latin America, especially an American or English person.

What would the Latinos in Colombian cities think? Who knows?
What would I think? Who cares?
Would I wear one? No
How would I feel wearing one: Stupid

A thought,, how many Latins (Mexicans) in the U.S. do you see wearing a T-Shirt emblazoned with SPIC? What would you think?

A custom shirt with archery target red circles on the back, Gringo on the Front and a picture of a chicken with a lusty look might be what you’re seeking.

I do it to myself and when others that I work with. My wife know's I'm not to crazy about the other guys I work with when I'm in Colombia. I always refer to myself and them as gringos. When refering to them, I put a little stress into saying it so that others know that I'm talking about the ones I don't like. Besides, everyone can't get past the obvious when they see me, so why not join in the mix.

God Bless America!

Depends on the country In Mexico 'gringo' definitely means American. In Colombia it can be anybody who'se obviously not from there or another Spanish speaking country, except Brazil. In Brazil, ANY foreigner is a gringo, even people from Uruguay or Venezuela, or Japanese tourists, or French-speaking black sub-saharan Africans.

I guess I'll always be 'gringo' just due to the fact that I'm twice the size of the average South American.
