I know this may be a strange question (it is to me), but I'm trying to continue to learn more about the Colombian culture. My question is this -- is gaining weight considered a sign of being in love in Colombia?
I was in northern Colombia (Barranquilla & Cienaga-Magdalena) for two weeks over the Christmas holiday. I don't remember how many times different people said I looked good because it appeared I had gained some weight since my last visit. I did not actually gain any weight but had changed my eye glasses & also my hairstyle a bit.
My fiancee (nickname la flaca) started to work on gaining weight about three months before my arrival. She started by eating 6 meals a day and later on settled on eating a supplement about two hours after each meal. She gained about 6 pounds in three months. When I arrived she had a small stomach "roll of fat" that she had never had before. Everyone said she looked better than ever since she had gained some weight.
Is gaining weight considered a confirming sign of being in love with someone in Colombia? It was unusual for me to have so many people (most of whom do not know each other) say the same thing. It was almost like it was another way of saying "we see you are in love.
Am I just dreaming or is there something about gaining weight that is associated with being in love in Colombia.
TIA
Don
