utopiacowboy says on Nov 17, 2005, 16:20: I'm with Mario. Your family could have come from Mexico five generations ago but to many people, you'll always be Mexican. If you actually KNEW her and her family you would know that they are as Texan as they come. Of course ignorance never stops anybody from babbling on PBH. Crazy4Cali says on Nov 17, 2005, 16:52: Just curious... If being born in Texas makes you Texan, of Mexican descent (as in the case of Ms. Longoria, for example), then if my parents were American and I was born in Mexico, would that make me Mexican of American descent? (not that anyone would guess that from my pasty-white gringo complexion).

kernow62 says on Nov 19, 2005, 16:31: Speaking of Mexicans. Anyone know if Vicente Fox is from the quaker family of the same name? I know the quaker Fox family were involved heavily in mining in Cornwall ... and since Cornish mining operations existed in Mexico in the 1800s I was just curious if there was a connection.

cam0940 says on Nov 19, 2005, 22:19: And it is now an official blowout. Can't believe you doubted USC. Love you like a brother GDL, but I think the last 36 games have proven that SC has a dynasty going. No disrespect, but there's no way--and I think hindsight proves it--that that championship should have been split with LSU.

cam0940 says on Nov 20, 2005, 08:06: Having lived in San Antonio for 3 years and Los Angeles for 20, in my experience, Mexican people give off an entirely different vibe in San Antonio than in Los Angeles. Why this is the case? I have no idea. Well, actually, I'm not even talking about Mexican people. I'm talking about people of Mexican descent. MY OWN PERSONAL observation was that here in LA, second or third generation Mexican-Americans seem to have far more national pride than the second or third generation Mexican-Americans in San Antonio. Brown pride shirts, Mexican flags, they seem to make sure that their children speak Spanish and truly remember where their family came from. In San Antonio, ALOT of second or third generation people don't even speak Spanish. I never ever, not even once, saw a cholo. Here they have a whole separate subculture, but in Texas, the majority were like Eva Longoria--very assimilated into mainstream American culture.

cam0940 says on Nov 20, 2005, 08:54: Mario, that's the worst picture I've ever seen of Rosario. In my book, I declared her hottest latina after the love scene in Alexander, previously held by Hayak after the bar scene in "From Dusk Till Dawn". The link you showed was kind of like the National Enquirer's photos that try to catch the actor/actress looking crazy, and then put it on the front cover. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with everyone having their own tastes.

I am very saddened by the thought that two of my five children are German and my youngest is Chinese, I wonder if my other two will still talk to them? What is even worse, I AM ENGLISH!!!! cam0940 says on Nov 20, 2005, 12:02: HELL NO!!!!! Two years ago they were CO-champions with LSU, only because we never got to play them head-to-head. The truth be told, the only reason LSU got those votes was because there hadn't been a Pac-10 National Champion in so long, coaches and sportswriters weren't ready to give it to SC exclusively. The Pac-10, during that time, was getting no respect as compared to say, the ACC, Big 12 or Big 10.

cam0940 says on Nov 20, 2005, 14:47: You're right GDL. I wrote that so fast I didn't put the SEC in there. They're ALWAYS coaches and sports writers' favorites. Which by the way, exposes the subjectivity of the whole system. It's nonsense. College football is dying for a playoff system. Must be a lot of fun watching your son play. Congratulations. Maybe on day he makes it big and gets to spoil Daddy a little bit. Plus by that time your Colombiana ought to be here. How cool would that be to take her to watch him play?

utopiacowboy says on Nov 20, 2005, 15:32: In answer to your question, Cam, I think it's because in many areas of Texas, Latinos are the majority. Over 60% of San Antonio's population is Hispanic so they don't need to spend a lot of time asserting their identity. Also I think there is a lot more intermarriage here. A Latino/gringo intermarriage elicits no comment or interest whatsover because it's completely normal. As a result there is a lot more "crossover" so I think they feel like they are part of the mainstream population. We went to a wedding yesterday and neither the groom nor the bride were Hispanic yet my wife found plenty of people to chat with in Spanish and even I spent a lot of the evening speaking Spanish. I have to wonder how often this is true in California.
