Is Estrato 3 OK for living?

I see that the vast majority of Bogota is either Estrato 3 or Estrato 4. Is there any huge difference between 3 and 4? I know one side of 1 de Mayo is 4 and the other side is 3. Is it worth the extra money to live in 4?

Well I think Mother Teresa would have no problem living in Estrato 1. ;-)

Seriously I think... you have to compare the individual complexes and who your neighbors are.I have seen some pretty nice folks in Estrato 3(more like me) and cheaper ulilities.

actually I live in chapinero (carrera 7 con calle 57) and I'm estrato 3, whereas the people who live above carrera septima are estrato 5 or 6 sometimes, that estrato thing is really tricky you know.... I love where I live, it's near transmilenio, near carulla, near exito, there's a park and a CAI a block away from my building, there are universities and there's also a lot of nightclubs around (I never go, though).

I live in estrato 4 I think that actually you must see the zone where you gonna live, i live in Ciudad Salitre , Bogota, its a so nice zone, live here its very relaxing..lots of trees, a mall close from here, its central and save zone, so i think you shoulnt think about which estrato is, just look the options of the zones in Bogota, see good thinks and bads.. but actually i would prefer 4. :)

what exactly is it.. that would make 4 better than 3? Better phone service, less apagones, police who come in 1 hour when you call instead of not showing up at all, mariachis on the street sing more on key, the indigentes smell better?

Higher is better that would make 4 better than 3?

Higher estradas provide the opportunity for a wider variety and more varied bitch fests.

3-4 doesn't tell you much From one estrato to the next you really need to look at the individual residence. It's a generalization, and generalizations don't really work once you get down to a single address. I also don't think there's a huge cost difference between the two.

My wife's area of Belen near Laureles is Strata 4 but two blocks over it's Strata 5. She says no one in her neighborhood wants it to be classififed as Strata 5 - all it does is drive your utilities up without doing anything for the neighborhood.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Depends Like everyone else here says, it just depends. You gotta go look at a place before you can make that call.

I just talked to an economics professor who said that his family is fairly wealthy, but he chooses to live in a strata 3 neighborhood for the quality of life. I've lived in 6 and I've lived in 3, and he has a point there - don't be too quick to make a judgment. There are some cool, if not exactly pretty, neighborhoods in strata 3. And some horrible ones.

Anyway, Linis has a point - check out Salitre. Nice area, but nowhere near as expensive as a 5 or 6.

Just got off the phone with novia. So far from what I've seen I would look in 3 or 4. She says the bottom 2 strata are often fine for infrastructure but very dangerous.
I would probably avoid 6 like the plague. Rich neighborhoods always seem to be filled with the most miserable people, at least everywhere I have been. She also said the same thing UC's wife said; that often the only difference between estratos 4 and 5 is that in 5 you pay more utilities.

I have some friends here in Carnegie Hill, which is part of the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and supposedly THE most expensive residential neighborhood in the world! And for all that high cost of living, the buildings generally are not well constructed. The walls are very thin, and you hear a lot of traffic and neighbor noise. The plumbing and elevators are just average, the cielings aren't high, the floors aren't super nice, etc. At least in South America if you pay through the nose you're gonna be looking at beautiful hard wood and granite and marble wherever you look, and you'll have some space to play a game of soccer in the living room if you want!

Kennedy is estrato 2 and there are part of kennedy that are quite nice, you have the transmilenio, sport center,Plaza de las americas near, mundo aventura, la primera de mayo. and you get transport to anywhere in Bogota. My favourite place is Ciudad Salitre, like linnis said is estrato 4 and 5 is a very nice area, and according to metrocuadrado the property there is going higher in value, than the rest of Bogota.

If i buy down there I'd probably either buy something brand new at pre-construction prices and then pay to have them custom-make it, OR I'd buy something run down but on a fairly nice block and renovate it completely to my tastes. But I wouldn't buy until I knew Bogota backwards and forwards in any case :) Right now novia lives in Suba and rents, so that will be home for me when I'm down there.
