Envigado Most of it is safe, it has some low income areas but most of it is OK, specially the entire area next to El Poblado.

Come on! Man Iam Colombian and I live in Medellín, which is nearby Envigado.

Listen, not only Envigado, but most areas of Colombia are very very very secure!. It is not as they show it on the news (Mostly American ones) to make you believe the entire country is a WarZone.

I invite you to come to Colombia and enjoy, not only envigado, but many cities and places that are also quite interesting.

And take a note, Colombia is a wonderfull country with wonderfull people. Of course we have problems, but many countries do.

Cheers

What have you been snorting?

There are many barrios in MDE that I will not frequent. I live in CTG and will not frequent several areas there. My information comes primarily from Colombian friends.

I don't mean the above as a slam on Colombia. I choose to live here. But it is reality.

The word "area" can be rather vague, from what I can see.... But I would say that most Colombian cities can be safe, for the average resident or traveller, if you know how to handle yourself and try to investigate about the local security climate in advance.

Other than that, it's a matter of luck. You do your homework first, and then you place yourself in fate's hands. Nothing too complicated about that.

You can protect yourself from certain risks, and that's good, but they will never be completely eliminated. Luck always has the final word, statistical probabilities aside.

This may sound a bit cliched, but it's still true: You can be mugged in the safest city in the world, but never see a thief in one of the unsafest. Nothing is written in stone.

A little off topic... but where did you locate the flat you're staying at? I'm looking for a place to rent for about 5 months. I've got a couple options now but the more the better!

Very Safe there Envigado is one of the safest areas in Medellin and there is a very good reason for this that I won't go into. You will find most of Medellin very safe but like any city anywhere in the world there are bad areas. You'll be fine and you will have a good time. Great people, great nightlife. And it's not a gringo ripoff like Poblado except for Puebla nightclub. They charge 100 mil for a bottle of Ron (table minimum).

If this is your first time in Medellin, you need to be careful taking a taxi from the airport into the city. There are a few taxi drivers who like to rob gringos. I can have my friend pick you up if you like, he lives in Envigado and speaks English or if you wait for a local flight to come in, you can catch the bus into town.

Enjoy Medellin!

Yes, RingoD, it is Parque Lleras and it is in Poblado.

Outside of the airport, I've only seen another gringo in Colombia once. Strangely enough he was in Monteria, a young guy who was with his girlfriend and her family. When I saw him I wondered WTF is he doing here?

My experiences don't seem to match those of the typical PBH gringo. I have hot water where ever I go. I never meet another gringo or anyone who speaks English. I never send money to my wife's family. No wonder Rocinante and Monpirri think my experiences are not authentic.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

The most dangerous thing in Medellin is the traffic. They will run you over like a rodent if you are not careful.

I stayed in Envigado a few weeks and found it to be very peaceful. I later moved to another apartment near Estadio. It was also very peaceful. I like those fruit bats that fly around at night.

cali373 Neither Envigado or Sabaneta are part of Medellin technically.

Envigado and Sabaneta are very safe, probably safer than El Poblado, Itagui, I wouldn't recomend for a foreigner to live there.

Not so, Ringogringo! "PASTY GRINGO. I am beginning to imagine or believe that that term is also an illusionary legend, even though Desi likes to report how many of them she can spot a mile away from Chipe Chape Mall."

I have never seen one of the pasties at the "Chippy Chappy Mall" myself! I almost nver go there because it's so far away from where I live when in Cali, and there are better malls much closer.(I've been paraphrasing Calipro and other Caligringos when they talk about their adventures there.) When I was in Cali last winter I was trying to spot a gringo there, but the only suspicious target was an albino Colombiano dressed in shorts and sandals...talking paisa!

Cheers,
Desi

Living in Evegado Hi:

I would love to know more about areas around Medellin. I am planning a trip for 1 year. Last year I spent 6 months in Bogota. Near the end of my stay I hated it there. The traffic, insane taxi drivers, the pollution, noise and terrible infrastucture did a number on me. I was really hoping to find a place a little more peacefull and safe...with better weather and more peacefull. A place where I could go and have a morning coffee and cigar. A nice walk where I don't have to worry about falling into sewer drain where the manhole cover is missing. I would like to live in a small community that is close to Medellin so that I can go to a nice gym everyday. I need a bachelor apartment with internet access. I would love to know more about the areas around Medellin that would suit my tastes. I would love to know what you think.

I apologize to those who love Bogota and admit that there were many things I loved about the city. Just my personal tastes.

Thanks

ringogringodiego I think you mean caslug, the gambler. I haven't seen him around here on these forums for a while. Yes, he's got fairly reliable information and he travels from city to city, I think he was also either teaching or studying for a while too.

It seems you got big expectations, If Bogotá did not fill them I believe Medellíl won´t do the trick either. I do agree Sabaneta is nice.

While in Bogotá, double chech some locations, that might help you chose better.
Check the areas before and after the toll at La Carera, there is a gym with pool included, and if you want to venture in Bogotá is just 10 minutes away, also you could try some parts of Chia, now with a BodyTech there.

"sewer drain where the manhole cover is missing" this it´s been fixed little by little.

Tomtom's response:

"What have you been snorting?"

Tomtom, I am impressed. I am glad to know that I am not the only scare monger here.

OK,,,,,,while I am much more familiar with Bogota, I have been to Envigado a couple of times and I can safely say, based on everything I have heard from unbiased (non PBH members) sources, Envigado is one of the safest places you can go not only in the Metropolitan area of Medellin, but in Colombia as a whole. Or, to state it another way, when Envigado becomes unsafe, the entire country will be in deep "do do."

Go to Colombia. Stay in Envigado. Worry Not.

I say Sabaneta and Envigado are safe, because I live around there for about three years out of the last four years, not just visit a couple of times.
