True of all major capital cities. Depends upon your style of living and if you depend totally on foreign investments paid in funds other than pesos. All in all, but then we are accustomed to living here and it beats living in say Miami, or God forbid, New York City. Have we cut back, sure, but then the cost of oil is driving a lot of cost increases. It would be a lot cheaper living way out in the campos but it would also meaning giving up a lot. Our idea of a big night out is not watching Tejo, but I did fine with the drinking part!

We are fortunate in that a lot of what we have is in pesos and the rest in dollars and we owe nothing..

Bogota is an interesting case because it would be possible to live in Bogota for a lot less than most foreigners do, but living in estrato 6 North Bogota is actually fairly costly. Even at that level, though, it's still nothing compared to the cost of being in NYC, Paris or any other major capital city.

Well I live in San Francisco, and here it is really very expensive. Even the gallon of milk is expensive here. And if you are renting, you are paying more than what I would pay in Bogota. Also cable TV here is about $90 USD. My phone services are about $80 including internet. I was told by my Colombian fiancee that services over there in Bogota are more cheaper than what I am paying in San Francisco, and I don't even own a car. So I don't think Bogota (I've been there a few times and I will be there within a month again) is really that expensive. I can do things in Bogota which I cannot do in San Francisco.

By the way, does anyone know where San Francisco stand at in the list of more expesive cities? I bet Los Angeles and Hollywood are expensive too and at the top of that list below New York.

But it also depends on who you ask. Most of you are comparing this with US salaries and cost of living here vs. salaries average folks make in Colombia. To them it's pretty expensive to live in Bogotá vs. other cities in the country.

It’s very surprising for how poor the general population is in Russia that Moscow is so expensive. I haven’t been there in about 5 years, however when I was there last, I knew the housing was quite expensive. Just a dumpy apartment was more expensive that a 3 or 4 star place in most other cities I have been. Dining back then was I thought average for most bigger cities here in the USA, but all in all everything seemed overpriced for what you got there. Not a cheep visit that’s for sure. If you’re heading to Russia, St. Petersburg is a much better destination. Much more to see!

I've never thought of Bogota as an expensive city but then again I avoid the high priced Tourist traps like the Large well known hotels(dann) and pricey rooms, pricey areas like the Zona Rosa(where all you see are more people like yourself and why pay for that pleasure? crazy) . I've always stayed at the Hostels or small, not so well known hotels,, eaten at small Restaurants off the tourist trail ect. The High price of these well known hotels are a deal breaker for me and I would rather spend $$$ on the Sights instead of 4 walls where I sleep for 8 hours. Even in New York City, the AYH hostel in Manhattan where I stay is less then $30 nightly. It is(price) what you make it.

I guess we now know who never watched the TV series, "Kung Fu."

That's what Master Poe called Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) Poe was always saying things like "Will you walk with me, Grasshopper?", or "GRASSHOPPER, BE YOUR SELF. AND NEVER FEAR THUS TO BE NAKED TO THE EYES OF OTHERS. YET, KNOW THAT TRUTH SO OFTEN MASKS ITS SELF. THAT WHAT IS SIMPLE IS RARELY UNDERSTOOD. THE DUST OF TRUTH SWIRLS, AND SEEKS ITS OWN CRACKS OF ENTRY. AND A TREE FALLING IN THE FOREST, WITHOUT EARS TO HEAR, MAKES NO SOUND. YET IT FALLS."
