Is Bogata safe?

OK, first I have been to Columbia quite a few times but am now moving there. I am considering Bogata. Without getting into politics or other things... what is the safety REALLY like? I live in Washington D.C. and there are places here I can be killed for just being white (not a gringo or not). Is it any different than downtown L.A., Chicago, NY, or Washington D.C.??? I would like to know what to watch for in the local climate and what precautions to take. I figure it like this: I have traveled the world and stayed in many barrios like certain parts of Lima or Antiochia/Medellin, and the only problems I have ever had were here in the good ole safe USA (been shot once and shived twice)... so if I am careful is it fine? or not? Unbiased opinions are requested please.

Is Bogata safe? This is objective criticism and not meant to be an attack. My observation as a gringo in Bogotá, Colombia leads me to believe you will be better respected if you learn to correctly spell Colombia and Bogotá.

yea, lot of prejudice

yea, lot of prejudice and mis-information. Bogota is like every big city, there are places where you can go and others which are better avoided. You have that in NY LA CHICAGO..., too.

What? Well, putting the "holier then thou" stuff aside, you managed to not answer the question. With so much knowledge at you obvious disposal certainly you can expound a bit for the rest of us "unwashed". Thanks for the constructive crticism and best of luck to you with you grammer school.

Sorry folks... Sorry folks, at 3am it is tough to see, much less spell well. Anyway, my comment was for the individual who managed to not answer the question and instead devote time to fairly unconstructive critiques. Thank you for the help from the others who did give me answers - it is appreciated.

Sunsetsrbest I believe aztec's comment was well intended and it's true. By the way, it's grammAr, not grammEr.

Sunsetsrbest, North Bogota is safer than South Bogota. Anywhere you go in Bogota you need to be alert, but you can live there safely, if you take care.

Entertainment... Sorry to hear that... here I was actually thinking I might actually have found a place to real information. How silly of me to think that. Thanks

Don't you love it... when someone joins a message board and after just one day is already complaining that it's not going their way?

If you just want information, go to an encyclopedia. If you want to sit around the virtual camp fire and swap stories or just listen to some tall tales, then pull up a log and pass the aguardiente.

santibog... Great, now I have 2 of you English majors to listen to. I do not spend time worrying about perfect GRAMMER, nor do I worry about the spelling at 3am in the morning, but I DO anticipate people will help me with my INTENT - and I am happy most people here are being helpful. I wish you luck also, but please spare me the deconstruction of my grammar and writing structure - "forest for th trees" ok? Anyway, thanks for your efforts...

North vs. South... Thanks for the advice Platano. There are several sections of the noth side of Bogota... is there one or two to avoid, or is all of the norte fine?

Colombiche Hey guys,

Give the guy a break. He is just asking a questions, isn't this called the Friendly Talkzone? Who cares how long he has been part of PBH? Is this some sort of virtual initiation rite or something?

Sunset, as platano said Bogota is safer if you stay in the north. There are neigborhoods in the south you should avoid. Just exercice caution, don't go around wearing expensive jewellery or watches or a $700 leather jacket. Just exercice basic caution, let the locals guide you.

You will be fine.

Good luck :)

Colombiche.

La Candelaria is safe in the day but a little bit dodgy at night. Cheap area to live though, good bars and some of the buildings are amazing.

Sorry you took it the wrong way. Just trying to help you avoid some of the mistakes I made. I am surrounded by family who are Colombians and they do get irritated by this faux pas. Colombians are by nature forgiving and often reluctant to offer a correction that may embarrass you.

safety depends on YOU... rule thumb, north safer than central which safer than south, day is safer than night. But it's also depends on what u r looking for.

Most tourist places open during the day, and museums and historical sites are mostly in the center, so you'll have no reason to go down to south bogota other than maybe passing thru in a bus or taxi.

Most IMPORTANT SAFETY ADVICE "ASK THE LOCALS!!!", from taxi drivers to hotel clerks, ask about day and night situation. Don't just ask one local in the area, ask several to get a general consensus. Since taxis are cheap, use them especially at night. Another recomendatation is during the day take bus or the transmil to see the areas in day.

Sunset, if u been to lima then N. Bogota is similar to miraflores and surrounding areas, quite safe, while central bogota is similar to central lima. Barranco at night is similar to chapinero at night. hope that help with references. Personally i can't recall ever walking thru a bad/dangerous area at night in ANY city in COL, because instead of walking i take a cab.
