PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
Not sure if this post will survive. I am cancelling my VoIP phone line but nstead of sending back the adapter to the US, I want to see if someone's interested here in Bogota. This will let you have a USA phone number here in Colombia. You can make and receive calls to the USA and Canada as if you were in the US. This particular one has a 561 number (Palm Beach county, Florida) but can be changed to almost any other US area code.
You must have a broadband internet connection for this to work properly. I have been using it with Cablenet (TV Cable) and it works beautifully (not sure how good it works with DSL). People keep asking me if I am really calling from Colombia because the sound quality is so good.
Let me know if anyone's interested. This would be really good for people who have lots of friends and/or family in the US or Canada, or for businesses that need to call internationally a lot (calls tp the US are included in the monthly fee and rates to other countries are fantastic).

meteoro says on Jun 10, 2005, 05:08: About billing... the monthly fee includes 500 outgoing minutes to any US or Canada number. Incoming calls are unlimited. You hook up the adapter (a small black Motorola box about the size of an answering machine) to the broadband modem that you get from the cable company. You hook up a regular phone to the adapter. Your computer is also hooked up to the phone adapter. The computer does NOT have to be turned on for the phone to work.

meteoro says on Jun 10, 2005, 08:53: Aclaraciones I use the least expensive Cablenet service ("150 Kbps) and the sound quality is perfect, as good as a local call. It only gets a little 'fuzzy' when the computer is being used simoultaneously. This would likely be resolved by getting a 'broader' broadband.

viewpoint says on Jun 10, 2005, 14:21: I may be wrong but I think he must have a Vonage account with a Motorola ATA adaper (reading between the lines). The account could only be transferred as he proposes but to do it sucessfully would require both him to consent to the transfer and the new purchaser to supply to Vonage or the service provider the new credit card information and billing information. If he supplied the service provider name you can email or call them for transfer instructions (or limitations). His offer is "very very" fair as $20 for the ATA installed is no money at all. He is actually giving it away and charging a little money for his time to install. Make sure and confirm the $45 credit transfers to your account. The monthly charge for the 500 minute plan at Vonage is $15.00/MO

meteoro says on Jun 10, 2005, 14:43: To gringoinbogota in order to transfer an account to the phone company a credit card must be on file. Anyone familiar with Vonage knows that they do automatic billing each month. I don't need to know the buyer's credit card number or US billing address, he/she can provide that directly to Vonage. I guess my message to gringoinbogota was not clear enough but I am no scammer.

If you still have it hooked up just PM the vonage number and I will call you on my Vonage phone and give you the detail.
