Is a 700 cc motorcycle with side car practical in Medellin?

Having seen and been in the traffic in Medellin, I wonder if a motorcycle with side car would be a safe thing to drive. The side car would be very useful. Any ideas?

I would check out the current local government rules regarding passengers on motorbikes and sidecars first!
For example, a woman that we know is not allowed at present to carry her 16 year old son at the rear of her bike.
Something to do with snipers as passengers, a crime prevention thing.
Others here will hopefully know more about this.
As for safety, cars tend to ignore or at best display less respect towards motorbikes and with a side car, I would expect the risk of an accident to increase due to the larger volume/surface area that can be hit. Many car drivers rarely use their mirrors properly. Whatever you do, be careful!

I have 15 with side cars with direct drive to the side car. They are all in storage in Ukraine,. On a trip 7 years ago I bought them for $350.each or less. Many need repaint and a couple with minor repairs but have many parts. All ventage WWII bikes. Most with less then 1000 miles on them, I live in Medellin and I needed to know what laws are in effect with these motorcycles with side cars. Will it be worth bringing them into Colombia or will they even be allowed. It could be interesting if they are allowed.

Hey!

In the Philiipines, they use taxi motorcycles with a 3rd wheel and then they are self enclosed. One time, we had 12 in one of them since our van broke down at the beach! OK, most were children, but still they took the weight! The photo is not of us with 12 people!

The photo is exactly like one I restored in the Ukraine. They will all fall under the antique vehicle law I am sure. Just like Colombia the people in the Ukraine take good care of their vehicles. These were bought out in the country where the direct deive to the third wheel are important for traction. They are great is all weather conditions and more so going up the hill I live on in Poblado. I will contact someone on Monday and see if I can bring them over and at what cost and if they are even allowed

Hola!

I think bringing in a side car for a motorcycle would get you upset with customs! You either have to pay much in import duties or you would be not allowed to bring the side cars into Colombia!

The WW2 side car looked nice! I appreciated seeing the spare tire and the step to get into it! LOL! Where is the machine gun?
I would suggest a snap cover to be attached in the case of rain.

Ultimately, I think the best concept is to have those WW2 like side cars made in Colombia! I sound silly, but possibly they could be cheaper than you could imagine! WOW. adding a windscreen to the side car would be nice too!

The side car carried the men of the military. Plus a 5 gal can of fuel, Machine gun with amo, so "A MAN" in one is not a problem. I do have the windshields and car covers for all of them. Bike and side car. They are all used bikes and as such are not taxed as new.

Used bikes would be a problem in importation. You need to research the "antique" aspect of the bikes.

btw, medefockinllin is referring to the anti-sicario laws........male passengers with guns....

kenblanquito says on Jul 5, 2009, 14:24:

Male passengers are potential gun carriers as far as the alcalde of Medellin is concerned, therefore I believe it is prohibited.
A side car may have the same laws as for a rear passenger and unless the rule has changed in the last few weeks, you could be breaking the law by doing that.
Please check this out before bringing these items here!
And, for certain circumstances, the police do appear out of nowhere and in the city itself, it is unlikely that you will be able to bribe them.

Sonny, as you know you can buy a Ural like the ones in your photos brand new in North America for about $10-$12,000. There's many different models and the specs vary quite a bit.

They're pretty cool.

Cheers,
Terry

By the way, those bikes are direct rip-offs of 1940's BMWs, manufactured today in Russia.

They're not complicated machines and they're super low horsepower so they're very under stressed, but when they do break they'd be an absolute bitch to get repaired in Colombia. I can't imagine the headaches...

That is correct and these photos are also available to anyone. As soon as I can I will load the origional photos I have. All 15 that I bought in the Ukraine were built in the 40s' Engineered by BMW.
Not as pretty but I have two restored already like the red on and the military one . The rest are pretty much as they were years ago. But they old ones are not under powered. I agree the ones you can buy in LA and NY are not that good but indeed pretty. Just to let you know this, however, the new ones are actually put together in Kiev Ukraine by a company that went belly up many years ago.
Bringing them to Colombia may not be the thing to do. I am only concerned about bringing one. If It is not the right thing to do then the car will do just fine. I am NOT attempting to SELL ANY OF THEM TO ANYONE HERE!!.
Simply trying to see it it is a good idea to bring one to Colombia. Nothing more

I had one in Cuba for a few years. It was held together with spit and a promise but it supplied decent transport for about 5 or 6 hours for every hour of maintenance. Of course those Cubans can fix bloody anything, waaaaay better than any Colombian.

Good luck with getting it imported under the antique loophole. It'd be a great conversation piece in Colombia.

Terry

This question has been asked many times and never answered directly. I suspect you would need to speak with the agency in Colombia that handles it ( I forget the name at the moment) However; from my memory (such as it may be) being old enough alone is not sufficient. There must also be some intrinsic recognized collectors aspect to the motorcycle.

I suspect Sonnys bikes would pass muster. I somehow wonder about my 1986 goldwing though.

I have a Lambretta 1960 TV 175 now 200cc with a Watsonian Bambini Sidecar here in Colombia unfirtunatly it has English plates as it 's nigh on impossible to get it registered however I do use it occasionally .
One thing to think about here Peajes it 's the same as a car would work out expensive I was thinking of taking mine top Cali on the 20th for the Vespa/Lambretta meet but with 4 peajes from Pereira to there it's a dear do.
The only other one I have seen is Jawa 350 which the Bomberos use for extinguishers but it does'nt have plates.
I did see a passenger one on a Jawa I wanted to ask the guy what permisos were necessary but he shot by.

Another thing to consider is you can't move through traffic like normal bikes .
I have ridden mine allover Europe even though the sidecar is on the English side on the left bit dangerous overtaking.
The reason mine is here is due to my ex brother in law supposedly asking the authorities if it was ok to bring them here I brought 3 Lambrettas ,big problems in Buenaventura going fron office to office for 2 days we tried the collection /Antique thing but they said no,in the end change manifesto your risk on the road PLEASE GREASE MY PALM SIR.

Thanks. These bikes I have are vintage for sure. A couple of them still have the Gun Mounts attached. I found 5 in a storage unit in Odessia Ukraine one of which was extreamly low milage. Under 100 miles. Tires dry rot but other wise in good condition. It was able to start and run. What I liked is that you can detach the direct drive from the side car and remove it very easily. It has a drive shaft actually.

Gator,
Thanks for the numbers. I will check but if the Jeeps can make it I am sure this bike has a good chance. The papers are all in order and all dates and numbers match. I have them already translated and notarized into English. I guess it will be necessary to have them put into Spanish.

As a footnote the Jeeps were imported originally 52,53 etc then I think in 1961 the government at the time made a decree that vehicles had to be built here or a large percantage or pay huge taxes this is why from 61 the Lambretta was built under licience by Auteco in Medellin until about 78/80 as the Indians who bought all the Italian factory in 1972 could not supply enough parts ,I had a 1977 Willys CJ6 which was built /assembled in Colombia as are Renaults/Chevrolets/Mazda etc it's protectionism you pay less taxes because it's built here look at the cost of imported Toyotas as against the ones that are assembled here.
That's why you can't bring them in (used) saying that there is in Salento an English fire engine & in Pereira an English Ambulance but with English plates these were gifts to Colombia after the Earthquake in 1998 when all the Fire engines in Armenia were destroyed & all the firemen died when the fire station collapsed, they have special permission though wonder if I paint mine red or white with a red stripe & fit flashing lights ?.
