IRELAND V COLOMBIA,,,.....2pm Thursday 29th

I would like to take this opportunity to commiserate with all my Colombia friends, at the loss they are going to have on the soccer pitch today.

Despite the fact that the new Irish boss, needs a translator for the team to understand one f***in word he says, 2-0 will be the score. ( Why can't those friggin Eye Talians speak English ??)

As we speak, it is about 4am over there. Most of the Irish team are just finishing up their last pint and will get a few hours sleep before the epic encounter.

It's funny how a burn out Italian trainer (Trapattoni) can still steal top money in a third world (ok, speaking of football) country like Ireland.
Ok... we'll meet at Cris' sport bar and see what happens...

Ya it looks like Keane and Duff are playing but its McGeady that Colombia should be worried about..he's been unstoppable for Celtic this year.

Is there going to be any football played in Medellin over the summer? I'm going to be there for a few months and wouldn't mind seeing a few games

Ohhh......the Bolovia .........??????????..............You obviously don't follow international soccer very much...................

Teams across the globe quake in their boots at the thought of facing the gallant Irish on the pitch.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The Brazilians, English , Italians etc etc have been known to suffer severe bouts of diiareia prior to each encounter. Nations, far and wide, only pray thar they are not subjected to humiliation on a grand scale.

In light of your statements, I have contacted the coach and instructed him to win by 3-0. I don't know if he understood me, as the dope can't speak English. He kept muttering something about spagetti and Vino roja............We'll see.

This clash between the hapless Colombians and the gallant Irish will take place on English soil................where Irish armies have won many victories on the battlefield in the past.

As it is only 6.30am here in Medellin, it is a bit early for Guinness, so I am getting into match form with a little chilled Pilsen in my corn flakes. I imagine the team will be doing the same.

I shall be standing a round of drinkeeees every time the Irish score. Let's hope it's not 10-0.

I just got back from breakfast. It's amazing the scene on the streets of Medellin this morning. Throngs of people are bedecked in the Colombian colours as they head off to work. Taxis and cars, of all shapes and hues are flying the Colombian flag. I spotted quite a few with the Irish tricolour.....and a lot of people wearing the Irish team shirt.

Most businesses have closed for the day. This is a really important match. Excitment is high and you can see the tension etched on the faces of many Colombians. Lines have begun to form outside the bars and pubs. You can hear the sound of the Irish National Anthem being sung from many parts of Medellin. The Irish supporters are indeed out in force for this mammoth encounter.

Just looking at the many Paisa beauties, dressed in the bright green colours of Ireland, would make a fella homesick. The Paisa girls bear a striking resemblance to Irish girls, their low-cut t-shirts and exposed mid-riff, those beautifull figures..........it's so hard to tell the difference between a Paisa and an Irish lassie.

I spoke briefly with the Irish team captain by telephone. He tells me that most of the team have only mild hangovers, so he is confident of victory. I expressed concern that two of the mid-fielders have broken legs and will be playing in full leg casts. He assured me that this, along with the fact that the Irish goal keeper has only one arm, should not pose a significant problem.

I tried to get in to the Pit Stop Hostal, to watch the match on their bank of enormous HDTV screens, but it is already stuffed with revellers. So it's off to Champions Bar on 80 to slum it with Chris. I will report later after Ireland score the first couple of goals.

Nuts_Junior in Medellin there will be semifinals of Colombian futbol until mid June with the Copa Mustang 1, The teams playing in the city are Envigado and Medellin... On July 12th Victor Aristizabal will be having his retirement game here in Medellin, with all the Colombian legendary players and supposedly Maradona will be attending. That will be all in football here in Medellin until July 22 when the Copa Mustang 2 starts again.

Cheers coffee_beaner, is it difficult to get tickets for the retirement game or do you just turn up on the day? I saw Maradona at a Boca Juniors game 2 years ago and thousands of people stayed on for about 15 - 20 mins after the game just to watch him dance in the stands....an absolute nutter if ever i saw one

I think Ireland's liquid lunch days ended when Keano started throwing hissy-fits, for the best really as people got a bit sick of seeing people like ray houghton running down the wing panting like a dog after eating too many burgers the day before

nuts_junior, tickets for the retirement game won't go on sell for another week or so.... If Maradona, Veron, Cafu come to play the game I'm sure the stadium will be sold out within weeks. As far as the game Colombia entered the game sleeping but now they are playing better... I haven't seen much of Ireland aside from the goal, we'll see what happens in the second half.

nuts_junior says on May 29, 2008, 14:48:

Was that Colombia's full strength team? They played pretty football but seemed to lack an edge up front when Ireland defended tighter in the second half. Freddy Guarin seemed impressive. Never seen him before but he controlled a lot of the play for Colombia...I'd say a lot of clubs will be looking at him a bit closer.

Not only Julio, but no Zuniga, no Aquivaldo Mosquera, no Tressor Moreno, no Jaime Castrillon, no Wason Renteria, no Rodallega and no Aldo Leao Ramirez.... regardless I think the team played very well even without these players.

romy says on May 29, 2008, 15:56:

No, the starting forwards ARE Edixon and Falcao and the offensive midfielder is Macnelly. Just that Falcao's goal drought from river kept up with him on the nats. Sanchez is the starting defensive mid... perhaps Amaya comes in for Guarin on a full side and Totono comes in for Escobar. The backline could easily be used by Pinto but it does seem like Armero will be the starting left back. Bustos and Zuniga is a big debate for starting right back, as Zuniga has much more offensiv and defensive quality, however Bustos' freekick taking ability has been fundamental to the early success of the team in qualifying. The center backs is a lovely 3 horse race for two spots as Perea, Zapata, and Mosquera are all quality and I might sneek in and say world class. R. Zapata isn't too far away from Julio for gk, the goal today was not his fault at all.

I liked the way Colombia played today, I'm hoping our strikers get going otherwise it is time to look at a guy like Rodallega that is tearing it apart in Mexico. And also Macnelly needs help in the generating of play so hopefully Totono can fill this gap or David Ferreira is also an option (instead of Escobar who is a good athlete but needs work on technique).

romy, actually the starting forward with Falcao is Wason Renteria and not Edixon, so far in the Qualifiers Renteria has been the starter. I also don't understand the reason for having players like Vallejo, Elvis Gonzalez and Anchico in the National team, ohh yea "la rosca de Pinto". Lets not forget the future goal keeper of the National team David Ospina, who seems to not exist for Pinto.

Nothing has been heard from him since the start of the match......was it after 3 minutes?

Ireland did play well and being able to compete well against a side like Colombia, is heartining.
