Iran To Build $230 Million In Nicaragua; Bush Administration&Condi Arroz Not Pleased,,,

Under the Iran-Nicaragua pact, Iran will fund a farm equipment assembly plant, 4,000 tractors, four hydroelectric plants, five milk-processing plants, a health clinic, 10,000 houses and two piers in the western port of Corinto. In exchange Nicaragua will export coffee, meat and bananas to Iran.

The Bodoke dam is part of Nicaragua's plan to shift toward renewable energy sources. Currently, 80 percent of the country's energy needs are met through oil imports.

Small price to pay for a "beachhead" in South America. Iran seem to have the better deal. And not too far from the Panama Canal.

5-7 years back, International living started pushing Nicaragua as a Retirement Haven for NorthAmericans and quite a few from the USA bought places down there. Now I read since Ortega came back into office they are bailing out on their Investments (or wanting to)but will and/or are suffering some pretty good losses just to get out. Its a good reminder and wake-up call to remind Ex-Pats just how fragile and fleeting Democracy can be in some of these central/south american countries and why renting may not be such a bad idea as now departed poster GIB used to always remind us of(this fact). A Renter in Nicaragua could simply walk away without remorse. This same thing happened to a friend of mine in Ecuador who payed a pretty fair price for a home in Quito, Ecuador and would like to sell since Correa came into power but cannot except a loss. Not what he envisioned happening 15 years ago to his retirement home,,,

miamimike - i commented earlier in another post regarding this same subject. i have spoke to people i know from ecuador and they are telling me of their same concerns about correa. is the main risk that the government would sieze the foreign owned property and nationalize it?

I actually have heard the opposite about what you wroye, setting Nicaragua 5-7 years back. however that was from Mexicans I met. Not from News sources. That Nicaragua continues to be a retirement Haven for NorthAmericans. Mexicans and Costa ricans were worried because it takes away investment in their respective country´s.

Well We will see in a couple of years who is correct.

Iran is copying the success of other countries. Brazil, with its strong currency, recently purchased a major meat packing company. Nice deal for them. Brazil got a 25% discount vrs. buying last year. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/5593040.html

China has their own form of free trade. Infusions of aid / technical expertise to assist countries build out their infrastructure and help the poor. In exchange for exclusive rights to the countries resources.

Quote:
On the investment front, Chinese state-owned companies often enter into joint ventures with SSA state-owned companies to secure sources of commodities. In Angola, the Chinese company SINOPEC is investing $3.5 billion in a partnership with Sonangol to pump oil from recently auctioned offshore blocks and plans to build a $3 billion refinery. In Gabon, the CMEC/Sinosteel consortium, financed by the Chinese Export-Import Bank, is investing about $3?billion in exploiting iron ore deposits; the plan is to construct a railway, a port, and a hydroelectric power station in return for exclusive rights to develop the mine. And in Equatorial Guinea, a subsidiary of the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) recently signed a production-sharing contract with the National Oil Company of Equatorial Guinea http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/fandd/2007/06/jacoby.htm

My opinion is that this is good. The best way to protect your investment is to quit being a jerk. A country like Iran sure wouldn’t want to upset its population when they can’t get cheap bananas.

Seems to me it was help save a democracy and avoid the entire region from becoming socialist. Personally, I think the drug part was "handy".

Save Democracy? Well when democracy begins to exist in Colombia, I hope plan Colombia works. Plan Colombia is a pork barrel project (earmark) to funnel US taxpayer dollars to U.S. Defense companies who supported the politicians. And yes, the drug part is "handy".

However I do agree that Plan Colombia Military aide came just in time when the FARC were in a very strong position in the 90´s and possibly have cause serious chaos in the Capital Bogota. So in that sense poco has a point.

I have learned (after many readings), to read between the lines.

Lastly, I have no idea what this post and most of the comments up until plan colombia came up, have to do with Colombia.

Not saying or implying Correa would seize Ex Pat's Property its just that when they bought they didn't envision a Prez who is a Cohort of Fidel castro. I doubt Correa would do that but who knows?? Events of this Nature in Latin America have happened before. In the 80s Ex Pats living in Mexico invested their Money in Mexican CDs, MM acounts ect and at the onset, were able to withdraw their interest in Pesos or dollars. Then the Mexican Prez, Salinas, changed the game plan afterwards to where foreigners could only withdraw in Pesos and losing of course, 10-15% when changed back to dollars, if that was their desire. A Friend of mine had invested in this manner but continued to withdraw in Pesos after the change so he was OK. He had a small account of $20K but was earning around 30% so his interest covered his rent, food nicely without ever touching his principle. You just nenevr know when some(not all) of these countries will pull something like Mexico did but to it never could happen is a misnomer. Then again, those who bought in these countries have already taken these risks into account and evidently can live with the risks so they are OK.

Shows you how well those UN sanctions against Iran are working:) The UN sanctions are an attempt to repeat the 1950's Western oil blockade against Iran. After Iran nationalized its oil industry the West determined that Iranians were too crazy to control their own oil, overthrew their democratic government, and installed a dictatorship. This time around the West is not having as much luck.

I'd forgot about the Shaw,, Carter helped do him in, if I remember correctly the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla had been cooling his heals in France prior to returning to Iran.

The first part,, democratic gorernment?

Quote: In Iran and many countries, Mosaddeq is widely considered a hero of anti-imperialism and victim of imperialist greed.[7] However a number of scholars and historians believe that alongside the plotting of the UK and US, a major factor in his overthrow was Mossadeq's loss of support among Shia clerics and the traditional middle class[disputed], brought on by his increasingly radical and secular policies and by their fear of a communist takeover.[8][9][10][disputed]

Does it say ,,,Increasing radical and secular policy,, humm, well that looks true and nope,, can't link him to Chavez on this one.
