ipod or mp3 in Colombia

I will be giving my friend's daughter an mp3 ,but I am not sure if it works the same way it does here in the states. For example, you can download music to your mp3 or ipod from napster or itunes with a subscription to their services ,but do these services exist in Colombia ? If not , what do people use .and not sure if the little girl can afford to subscribe to a service to load her music.
any input is greatly appreciated.

You cannot join Itunes from Colombia. Requires a USA credit card and address. Also the software identifies the colombia IP and won't allow you to join. You can use any MP3 and load up on free music from a multitude of file sharing programs. I think the new sony model is a great deal for the money.

I like the Sansa View much better than ipods. They are cheaper, work faster and you can use them like a flash drive.

Don't get an iPod. It is much easier to buy another brand's generic MP3/WMA player. Anyone you buy in the US should be compatible with most Windows 98 or newer PCs.

Although you might want to stay away from Sony MP3 players. Some of their models only allow you to transfer songs using their proprietary software. Make sure you get one that you can just plug into a USB port and copy files to it directly in Windows(like a flash drive as Chris mentioned). This way, you don't have to install iTunes, Sony or any other special software.

Rio, Sansa, iRiver and others make good models.

I have given three friends iPods in Bogota and they have no problem downloading music. One of the kids I have an iPod goes to San Andresito and they load all the music he wants. Even if you are unable to subscribe to iTunes there are ways to download music.

itunes works fine in Colombia as long as you have a C.C. with a US Address.

it works fine for me here, I rent movies and buy songs directly from my PC.

I sent my husband an iPod while he was still living in Colombia and it works just fine. The only bad thing with an iPod is that if you choose to get new "legal" songs on there, they are now only available as MP4s which means you can only listen to them using an iPod, nothing else. You can't even burn them onto a CD as MP3s to listen to them somewhere else, it sucks.

I agree, Sansa makes very good MP3 players for a fraction of the cost and of very good quality.

I much prefer staying away from iTunes. It cracks me up how a few years back, Apple was constantly whining about Microsoft's anti-competitive practices, yet they've done everything they can do keep competitors from selling iTunes content or using iTunes on competing players and software. They have the legal right to do it, but it sure is hypocritical. The biggest travesty is that they will supposedly have a "monopoly" on selling Beatles' songs. Whoever cut this deal for the Beatles music should be shot.

Buy.com sells some refurbish models. Ok recertified is the correct word. Real cheap and it looks good. I may get it later.

mp3 is really good and i wouldnt go the way of the expensive apple itunes/ipod route mainly because you can get a better deal from mp3 players. my sony 20gb lasted ages when i was in the heat and humidity of north colombia and the snow of parque nacional los nevados en manizales. there is another make called creative which are not too bad for mp3 and they have some good speaker type attachments plus you can get an mp3 in the smallest of pockets these days with the type they now have compared to even 12 months ago.

oh and if you want free music like i do, then try visit this site where you can download lots of tunes from people all over the world once you have installed the software, there is nothing wrong with this just like going to buy the burned CD's and DVD's from any colombian in any street there or any place in central/latin america......dont know why the authorities waste so much time trying to do people for this in usa and uk (file sharing) when there are bigger fish to fry

Thanks guys ,You have all been very helpful, Thanks Juanes , I have bought her a Sandisk 2 gigs for $80 , she loves it , only thing though, the color is black , but it is easy to use and it sounds great and it has a slot on the side where u can add more gigs if you want. I think it is good one to start her off with.but i wish it was a different color like pink or purple for a girl .

I personally use 360 Share Pro to download music, you pay about $30 for a lifetime membership and has tons of music and movies to download, now i don't know if they have access to it in Colombia , but you mentioned Kiwialpha I assume they can access it in Colombia, I hope they can , I will send them the link.
