iPod - leave it at home when going to Colombia?

Hola todos,
I've been living with my Paisa novia in London for the last 2 years, & we're going to Colombia in December (my first time there). Working with computers I'm a bit of a gadget man - iPod, laptop, digital camera & was wondering if it's wise to take the iPod. My gf's brother says I won't be able to use it in the street/public places without attracting undue attention. I imagine some of u have travelled with yr iPods - what do u recommend? Am not taking the laptop either, so just the digital camera; trying to travel light.
Muchas gracias a ustedes por ayudanme. Mi español es mas o menos, pero mejor cada día. Viva Colombia!

Take it Being a fellow techie, I know how you need to have your gear with you. When I go next month, I'll bring my digital camera and I-River mp3 player, but like you not my laptop. It's just asking for trouble and something else to carry on the plane. You're going with your girl and have other things to do besides using your iPod in the street. I'm just bringing it for the plane trip, maybe some downtime in the house, and also to share my taste of music with my girlfriend's brother.

Depending on where you're going, you can always slip into a cybercafe for web stuff. My girl has one 10 minutes from the house.

Bring it, but keep it safe! Hi,
i just found out about this forum and i'm so excited about it. I'm Colombian and I've been in the U.S. for 6 years. I'm going back to Cali in two weeeks. Anyway, as a fellow tech nerd/junky and a Colombian girl I can tell you that having your ipod and digital camera and laptop will be just fine. Of course, it depends where you are and how you use them. I plan on taking all of those items myself, including my videocamera. Basically, don't flash your ipod around in the streets (no matter where you are) it would be the same deal if you had a cd player, just be discrete. For the digital camera, same thing. Have a friend with you and don't take pictures in a poor neighborhood or crowded downtown by yourself. The same rules apply if you had an old school camera. Finally, if you feel you need the laptop at home or whatever, take it. If you just want to use it to get online somewhere outside, then I wouldn't bother. As the earlier post suggested, there are internet places to go instead.
Have fun, enjoy your music and take lots of pics!

Uploading pics from digital camera Thanks for yr comments, yeah should be OK will just use it in the house & stuff. I heard that a guy on the streets of London got a knife pulled on him for his iPod recently, so u gotta be careful anywhere.

Another techy Q: In Colombian internet cafes I suppose u can upload pics from yr memory card in yr digital camera? Just wondering when my 256 & 32MB memory cards are full of cool pics, should I get 'em cut to CD (I'm a little snap happy, so they'll be full pretty quick!). If I carry around CDs of pics & I manage to lose them...no voy a estar feliz...has happened b4 sending photos from London - NZ, lost the lot - 2 yrs of travelling memories gone :( I prefer to upload them to Picturetrail.com or similar as yr pics are stored & yr family/friends can see what yr up to. Any other good sites u guys use?

Que bacano esta foro!

IPOD There are lots of gadgets down here including iPods, etc. My main concern walking around with an iPod playing music wouldn't be getting robbed but getting flattened by a speeding cab or bus. Traffic here is a bit nuts and I advise you to have all your senses about you when walking around.

Download at home and upload cd pics! I don't know how easy it would be for you to download your pics from your camera on a public pc, it would get pricey for sure (spending time in an internet site). I would bring my pc just to download the pics and burn them on cd. In fact, that is what I will do when I head over there in the next couple of weeks. Burn them on cds and then take the cds to an internet place to upload them on the web and send them on emails!
I use a cool website to upload my pics, you can buy prints through them and the quality/price is awesome. The site is called www.snapfish.com and you can also share your pics from there.
Take care !

Internet Access / television Moving to Bogota in August and wondering what types of internet access I could get at my home? Is there high speed internet and how much does it cost each month? What about cable TV and how are there channels and programs in English?

Net access question There is cable broadband and DSL everywhere in Bogota. It's not as fast as what you normally get for cable in the USA but it does fine for most things. My bill for all the premium cable channels plus the fastest available service for broadband is about Pesos 250,000 a month, or about $95 US. Not cheap but probably cheaper than the same thing in the USA.

Memory card media reader for iPod Re: Storage of digital pics w/out the need to take a laptop, if like me u want to travel light...I got a media reader (Apple accessory), it hooks onto yr iPod, u slot in yr compact flash or memory card from camera, then upload them to iPod. Since they are basically a hard drive with min of 20GB, you'll have tons of space for yr jpegs. Then hook up the iPod to any PC with USB/firewire, & the PC should detect it as another drive (I imagine XP would do this best). Then like Lauranada says u can cut em to CD, ready to upload in an i-net cafe + u'll have a backup of yr pics on the iPod. Runs on normal batteries, no need for AC power. I think they go for around $99US. Just an option for iPod users who don't want to lug a laptop around Colombia with them! Qué chévere!
BTW, I converted my XP laptop to completely Spanish OS yesterday as I wanna learn more techy words in español...lets just say its a good learning curve when the error messages start popping up & u have to figure it out!
hasta luego...

Not bringing mine I think this is a personal thing, and I personally like not to have to worry about things - so I'm not taking my ipod on my next trip, or my wedding or engagement ring. This is because I don't think you should bring anything you would break your heart over if you lost, no matter what country you go to. My ipod is brand new, and I don't want to be guarding it all the time.

It's not as if you'll get robbed as soon as you step off the plane or anything like that, the advice above is good, and the chances are you'll be fine if you're sensible. If you'd rather take your gadgets with you to get the most of them when you're there - go ahead! Some people would say what's the point in having them anyway!

Here is my golden rule - would you sob uncontrollably if someone stole it (be it an ipod or a family photo)? Then don't bring it!!!!

USB Kiwi,
I was in Colombia not too long ago & took my big laptop, digital camera & an external USB hard drive. Although I didn't have any issues with my laptop being at the hotel (locked up in my suitcase when not in the room), there are cybercafes all over town nowdays (Bogota/Cali). To keep it light & safe, I suggest you get one or two 256/512 USB memory flash drives or even better, an external USB hard drive (5Gb & more). This way, it can be connected to a cybercafe computer & pictures can be transfer onto it from your digicam. The less you carry the better unless you prefer options such as what to wear, then best to bring varied clothing rather than techie stuff. Less to worry about. I reckon the iPod can serve as external drive for data if you use the Windows software. One thing, most computers were Windows 98/Millenium, not many XPs so keep in mind to bring respective Win98 drivers in floppies. It may sound complicated but it is not at all. Oh, some cybercafes have their systems locked-up so it may be difficult getting to a USB port (hardly the case but did notice two such places) Keep it simple! Enjoy Be Safe!

Kiwi I'm not much of a tekkie but Babylon software has been a big help. Click on any word in your computer (in an error message, an e-mail, a webpage) and get a definition. Go to Babylon.com and download Babylon Pro. After 30 days the "pro" features disappear and you're left with the nearly as good free version. I use it for Japanese and Spanish, although it doesn't give difinitions for some of the spicier words posters here use. jaja

Dude hide bring it but hide it. Don't take it out and if you want to listen to it do it at home ...or in you hotel. Or buy some really cheap looking headphones to go out with it and never take it out of your pocket!
