Barricade Films Announces Launch of Documentary "Empire in the Andes"

Barricade Films has announced the launching of its documentary "Empire in
the Andes: the war against the poor", which will be supported by Justice for
Colombia, the National Union of Journalists and Amnesty International.

For the last decade The United States (US) has been at the forefront of a
longstanding War on Drugs in Colombia, which since September 11th has become
amalgamated with the War on Terror. This has led to the US increasing its
military presence in Latin America. "Empire in the Andes" analyses the US’s
involvement in Colombia and explains how it is linked to the implementation
of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) which will benefit US
Corporations, and how it is affecting the Colombian people.

"Colombia is the third largest recipient of US military aid in the world and
has one of the highest rates of human rights abuses in the world. However,
the mainstream media only frames Colombia’s conflict as a problem of drugs
and terrorism. With this documentary we have tried to give a voice to those
who have a different analysis of the conflict. What is happening now in
Colombia, and the wider Andean region, like many other places in the world
subjugated to corporate interests, should be shown in the context of its
effects upon the majority of people, rather than just the elites" said
Melissa Herman, producer and director of Barricade Films.

The film includes exclusive interviews with Latin American and the US
political activists, original footage and a wide variety of Latin American
music.

The film launch will include a Q&A session with the renowned Colombian
journalist and filmmaker Hollman Morris, who has received numerous death
threats for his reporting on the Colombian state’s role in the violation of
human rights.
