Interpol confirms authenticity of Raúl Reyes's computer files

The information found in the computers of the deceased leader of the rebel Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), Raúl Reyes, was not manipulated by Colombian authorities, according to an Interpol's report to be released next May 15, as disclosed by Bogota El Tiempo daily newspaper.

The report stated that a committee comprising computer science experts from Korea, Australia, and Singapore working for the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) completed last May 2 the investigation into the three computers found in Reyes' camp in Ecuador, Efe reported.

"The first finding was that Reyes' files were not manipulated and that security agencies and citizens who had the computer in their hands kept them safe," the Colombian newspaper stated.

the thing that i haven't seen - or maybe missed - is that interpol functions primarily as a clearinghouse for international law enforcement data, thus has pretty sophisticated techno capacity.

uribe has often been accused of arrrogance, among other things, but never stupidity. it would take a real idiot to manipulate that computer data, announce as real the manipulatioons - then send off the machines to interpol for verification.

Actually, Robi, wasn't it Buggy who argued that the computers couldn't have possibly survived the bombardment, therefore must be fake?

nope. the world should quit worrying about interpol's results. buggy has previously announced that unless interpol finds data manipulation, he won't believe their findings.

What is suspicious is the lack of key questions of proportionality, significance, and casualty with regard to the support the FARC are supposed to be recieving from Venezuela and Ecuador.

For example, what percentage of FARC's resources come from Venezuela and Ecuador? Are they training frighters? If so, how many?

What difference does the support make military?

Where does the FARC get the vast majority of its resources from?

Without questioning the porportionality, significance, and casualty of the support you fall into the American Propaganda trap - the same technique that made Saddam responsible for 9/11 in the eyes of many.

tomtom33 says on May 6, 2008, 17:23:

No one that I am aware of in the US ever thought or said that Saddam had anything what so ever to do with 9/11. Exactly what many are you speaking of?

Alma del Norte says on May 6, 2008, 17:27:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly seven in 10 Americans believe it is likely that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, says a poll out almost two years after the terrorists' strike against this country.
Sixty-nine percent in a Washington Post poll published Saturday said they believe it is likely the Iraqi leader was personally involved in the attacks carried out by al-Qaeda. A majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents believe it's likely Saddam was involved.

The belief in the connection persists even though there has been no proof of a link between the two.

Alma del Norte says on May 6, 2008, 17:31:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A Republican congressman from North Carolina told CNN on Wednesday that the "evidence is clear" that Iraq was involved in the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.

"Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11," Rep. Robin Hayes said.

Told no investigation had ever found evidence to link Saddam and 9/11, Hayes responded, "I'm sorry, but you must have looked in the wrong places."

vladimiro says on May 6, 2008, 17:40:

My point, even if it were true, how important is it?

For instance, it is true that Zarqawi got medical treatment in Iraq before the war. But the US then used this to "prove" that Saddam supported al-Qeada, which is ridiculous.

tomtom33 says on May 6, 2008, 17:43:

I am stunned. But I never claimed that my countrymen were very smart. I'll be damned if I know where they could have ever gotten such an idea.

Guess I have lived in Colombia too long.

tomtom33 says on May 6, 2008, 17:50:

As far as I know the US never seriously tried to link Saddam with Al Qaeda. He used WMD against the Kurds and the Iranians. He attempted to make the world think that he had large stockpiles of WMD. He paid bounties to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. He invaded Iran and Kuwait. He refused to cooperate with the arms inspectors. And he slaughtered his own people. Those things were more than enough.

Mr. Hollywood says on May 6, 2008, 21:32:

Vlad and Alma, you're missing the point. No matter what the dollar sum, both Ecuador and Venezuela have helped the FARC immeasurably by allowing them to operate with impunity across the borders.

If Venezuela or Ecuador really wanted to put an end to the FARC all they'd have to do is patrol the borders and stop the FARC from using it as their hideout.

slguy says on May 7, 2008, 07:16:

"No matter what the dollar sum, both Ecuador and Venezuela have helped the FARC immeasurably by allowing them to operate with impunity across the borders."

which is one reason i gotta admire uribe's resolve re: the ecuadorian incursion. i hope he continues to deny these bastards a free pass, just because they scurry into a rathole that some foreign government provides them.

i know uribe did some mea culpas - but he hasn't promised not to do it aagain, has he?

vladimiro says on May 7, 2008, 20:16:

Doesn't the FARC's Putumayo drug fiefdom have anything to do with thier strong presence in Ecuador?

They've had military camps in border areas since long before Chavez, or Correa came to power, so are there more FARC bases now then there was before Correa came to power?

In fact, isn't it US drug policies ( like the coca eradication in neighboring countries which caused coca production to move from those countries to Colombia in the first place ) that is the real cause of the FARC's military strength?

It is suspicious not necessarily because the laptop story may not be true( I have no way of knowing) but because questions of proportionality and significance have not arisen.

Even if true, what difference does it make?

billyb says on May 7, 2008, 20:28:

I don't know Vlad, but if the laptop files are genuine as this report suggests, then the fact that the FARC was financing Correa's campaign is pretty damned significant.

Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

Oh the Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.

Oh the First World War, boys
It closed out its fate
The reason for fighting
I never got straight
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war starts
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.
