Internet services in Medellin

I plan to spend a few months in Medellin and will be renting an apartment. How fast can you get high speed internet set up and how good is it? and at what price?

If anyone has information about this and which companies to contact, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

TriplePlay EPM provides probably the best DSL home service, they have a plan called TriplePlay, that gets you cable tv (64) channels, VoIP and DSL connection, they offer three speeds, from 96kbps to 256 kbps. Of course, the prices vary according to the DSL speed.
Check their TriplePlay website:

has anyone used HAs anyone in Medellin used Vonage with EPM Internet? I'm assuming it must be 256kbps, however it looks like EPM's fasted upspeed is 128kbps whcih I assume causes some problems. Can anyone who has used Vonage in MEdellin report? Any problems or does it work like a charm with no problems? Thanks

ColombiaBoard's recommendation is correct. I have used the 128/64 triple play and upgraded to 256/128 triple play plus. The slower uplinks pose a bit of a problem for both of these speeds when attempting to use a computer and the VOIP service at the same time. 128/64 doesn't provide enough bandwidth to accomidate both. With 256/128 it's still marginable to use two VOIP lines at the same time or the computer and one. When running speed tests I never found that I received the speeds that they they advertised.

Vonage works best with these lower bandwidths service providers when you go to your Vonage dashboard and set the vonage bandwidth for low (not medium or high). That will use about 30 kbps of bandwidth and will work better (I have found). There are other service providers that can use as low as just 17-20 kbps plugged into a USB port which work well on even dial-up connections or the slower ADSL or broadband connections.

I have been using vonage and AT&T on the broadband connection and since AT&T uses 90kbps it crowds out Vonage and they can't work at the same time allowing accomodation of two conversations.

If you don't have a cedula you won't be able to sign up for service and someone else will have to do it for you that has a cedula. Signing up for service for two months might not be that practical for a foreign person. EPM is a great utility company but all of it's forms of internet connections are slow, expensive and dated but nothing else I have found in Medellin is better.

In Panama City I have 1/2 meg of up and down link for $25.00 per month in my apartment. I called, asked for service and it was installed the next day up and running.

Bump--Couple additional questions. JFS, what does your last post refer to? My Spanish skills don´t come anywhere near understanding that thread.

Aside from that, is EPM still the best if you only need an Internet connection (ie, no cable/TV)? Does anyone have anything cheaper/better for a Mac user with wireless capabilities?

EPM Sucks I recently purchased the internet connection with this lame company. The low cost for around 100kps means that if you are downloading (T3 or T1), your download speed is around 20kps. For most this does not mean nothing but for me it is a real problem. Also, I like to watch some of the Web Tv stuff like TVU where I can watch football broadcasts and so on. I also like to see things on YouTube. No way you can watch this stuff unless you are willing to watch the vid feed trying to catch up every 2 seconds.

Anyway I "upgraded" to 700kps. I was told that I could get this speed on the Internet. After the installation, I did a speed test and only got around 225kps. They came to my place the next day and did their own test. The were able to get around 300 kps. I complained to them that I signed up for 700kps. Here is what these idiots told me,

Sorry Sir but you can only get around 300 on "international internet!" Don't worry because you are getting 700kps on "national internet." Oh yes what a deal I can get 700kps in Colombian only. Hmm these guys are really advanced! Not! According to these fools there are two internets! Sorry my mistake.... I didn't know the internet had a national and internation flavor. What a crock of at # at $#%%. Now I have to write them a bloody letter to get back my lame 100kps internet connection. Oh yes that is 100kps Internation and National!!!! (I think). By the way, it is very difficult to get a good streamline feed i.e., TVU with 300kps. I did not find that much difference between 100kps and 300kps. This 700 kps for around 170,000 COP is a real ripoff, because it DOES NOT exist! At least not in my world. welovebogota.com
