Internet Radio

Just thought I'd mention this to anyone homesick for Colombia.

Get an Logik IR100 (£40 frrom PC World in the UK) - it needs a wireless internet connection and tune into thousands of radio stations around the world including Caracol etc.

I saw this a while back on the Best Buy web site. Does it really work though? It's pretty pricey...

You can listen to many Colombian stations on the internet for free. Caracol has most of their various stations available at caracol.com.co. A quick google search will find lots of others. I've been compiling a list of bookmarks, but it's at home. I'll post them tonight if I get a chance.

I'd love to listen to these on my stereo withoug having to bring down the computer speakers and going back up to reload the page when it shuts down. Not only that but I would love to see some kind of internet radio that I can install in my car and get all kinds of Colombian stations.

I run my computer sound through my stereo amp-all it takes is a special patch cord and I've got all kinds of Colombian music for free-Grupo Niche on now in fact.

Yep. A relatively cheap, slightly older PC will serve well as a media server for audio and video.

I hooked mine up to my amp using a digital optical cable and to my HDTV using the VGA port. Most TVs don't have one, but many do support DVI which is common on video cards. Amazingly enough, my relatively old GeForce video card autosensed the TV's resolution through the VGA port and displays in full 1080p.

If you want to go further, there are a few companies that make patch panels and media remote controls for PCs. I know that Logitech makes a remote and a few Creative Labs sound cards come with good audio patch panels.

There is a station called La Vallenata.

http://www.lavallenata.com/

Click on the "Escucha Ahora" link at the top of the page.

Also check out the caracol.com.co site. When you click to listen, it will give you a dropdown menu with a bunch of their various radio stations.

Sorry that you aren't familiar with these basic home theater/pc terms, but it would be of little use to dumb down an explanation that might be useful to someone interested in such a setup. These are not esoteric terms, but instead some that would be known to anyone with a cursory knowledge of home electronics.

What am I supposed to say? "You get this doohickey and plug into the thingamajig and you get that thar intraweb on the ole' boob tube."

The IR100 is pretty good for £40 - it got a good review from What HiFi and I'm pleased with it. Revo, Tangent, Roberts and even BT also do them but they're a fair bit more expensive. I could connect the Mac to my HiFi downstairs but I liked the idea of having a portable radio that could be put anywhere in the house. Internet radio in the car would be fantastic but rural Scotland has yet to see a wide WiFi network!

$40 pounds? That's pretty cheap it's now at $150USD here in the US and it was at $299 last year:
