Internet purchases and Import tax

Hello All,

Well thanks for all the replys to my last post about brinking in a laptop from the US, though nobody managed to help me on the subject of import duty and tax. So, if I were to purchase an item from ebay, or an online shop in the states (i.e. a laptop computer) and had it sent to my address here in Colombia what would my charges be on an item say valued at 1000 dollars. I hope someone can be of help as I dont seem to be able to find and answer anywhere!!!

Gracias,

Gavin

I had a laptop shipped from the US. I had it shipped as a "gift" and even that way they charged me something like 300,000 pesos. I'm guessing it might be more if you have it shipped directly from the seller cause it obviously wouldn't be a "gift." It might be better to have it sent to a friend first and then have him send you it.

I sent a laptop from the US... I sent a laptop from the US last Jan. to my step-daughter in Bogota for he to use at school. I labled it as "school supplies" and as a gift. It took 6 weeks to arrive and she had to pay the Colombian equivelant of $160us. It took six weeks for the package to arrive. The only way to get a new laptop in country from the US without having to pay a large tax is to hand carry it. Now that my wife is working for a major airline (since May of this year), I can get a round trip ticket to Bogota for $60us ($125us for first class) making hand carrying high end electronics to the relatives a lot faster than international shipping and cheaper than paying the importation taxes. All of them are making their Christmas shopping lists early this year. I'll take computers, laptops, I-Pods & other goodies to them and bring back coffee, Jumbo Jets and Mani-Motos for us.

"short end of the stick" Hey I don't mind, as long as someone will drive me down to Silvania so I can spend a week at the family's villa, sitting by the pool sipping cold Polars & Aguilas.

The Villa It's got 8 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, dining room, kitchen, pool w/waterfall, a seperate building that has dance hall, game room and upstairs chapel, a pavillion w/billards table, tennis courts, planton grove, fruit grove, seperate servents house and a monkey cage next to the entry gate. I'd love to live there someday (in the villa, not the monkey cage).

Gavin You can just take one laptop with you without having to pay any tax, I usually carry on with my laptop every time I go to Colombia, if I want to carry on two laptops to Colombia, I just have to tell my wife to carry the second one for me.

Thanks All Well thanks to everyone that has helped me. It looks like I am going to get my friend to bring me one in from UK duty free. So will be no charges.

Thanks again.
