Internet Providers in Medellin

I am moving back to Medellin in a few days, and need to get some advice on peoples experiences with internet providers. Either cable or ADSL. I have used UNE in the past and they were reasonable.

Une,

Is a trade off. It is dirt cheap, works reasonably well most mornings with speeds that allow you to do most things. There are issues with disconnect when the phone is used, there are also fairly frequent losses in internet; maybe goes down 3 or 4 times a week for realitively short periods of time ( usually less than 1 hour ) After noon the traffic starts to build and the service slows down to the point that some pages with videos and alot of data will not be able to be opened.

But for business that is primarilly reading and responding to emails, it is a good bargain and if you pick up a dial up internet card from local store, in the event you need internet and it is either too slow, or down, you can use dial up which at times equals or beats the slow moments on une.

Telmex was not available in my apartment building. but even if it was today, i think une works well enough for me.

So how much are you guys paying a month for these services? I'm moving to Medellín as well next month, and I was hoping to get internet too.

I have ADSL 1 meg with Une at the office in Itagui and get (with speedtest) right at 820kb bidirectional. There is a strange problem with what I assume is latency in that I from time to time can't sent outbound email via SMTP. The problem is erratic and has never been an issue at the house where its cable with UNE. I am curious if others have had problems with SMTP (on port 587 and 25) over ADSL connection in Medellin..

im here in el poblado and i ran a test off a server in panama. i paid for a 712k connection and never upgraded, but i just tested and im downloading in 1 Meg.

EPM told us today that we can only get a 1 Meg connection unless we have a business. if you have a business then you can get the 4 megs.

Telmex has a special with 50% off your service for 3 months, free installation, 1 year contract, and it seems a bit cheaper than EPM. I think you will get higher speeds and save money with telmex.

NOW IF WE COULD JUST GET THE ELECTRICITY BILL UNDER CONTROL ... OUCH...ESTRADA 6 IS EXPENSIVE... 4 PEOPLE 350,000 just on the electricity part of the bill! ouch! THATS what happens when lots of gringo friends come to visit and leave the lights, tvs, and run computers all day. ahhh well definately better to have fun visitors and a full house!

The rates must be a lot lower now because of the TelMex competition. I'll guess everyone posting prices in this thread (except Rocinante who is paying too much) recently signed for their internet in the past 4 months and got these lower rates.
