International Drivers License

I was wondering if somebody had information about how to get an International Drivers License. My finacee is coming next month. She needs to be able to drive here. Anyway getting a license in Pennsylvania is a pain and takes some time. However Pennsylvania recognizes International Drivers Licenses for one year. She needs to get it in Colombia. I have no idea how she goes about getting. She started to look into it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Try this Call Triple A in your area and see if they know where she can get one in Colombia. It could be a longshot, but they (Triple A) issue the international drivers license stateside. Perhaps she could contact el Minesterio de Transporte as well.

The Only Place... I know of is ACC de Colombia. Give their office a call at 672-0936.
the ACC is kinda like triple A in the USA.

If that does not do any good tell her to call the Ministry de Transporte in Bogotá. As far as I know no state in the USA requires the permit you mentioned and some states do not recognize it. In any event she MUST have a valid Colombia driver licence along with the international permit. The United States signed an international agreement allowing visitors to use their own licenses while driving in Florida. FYI about the only thing an International Permit does is translate her Colombian DL into English.

Thanks...I called AAA and they said that she needs to get in here home country. They also said her embassy can do it. It is required by Pennsylvania. I don't know about the treaties you mentioned Gator but all DMV requirements are state decisions. The Federal Goverment has no say in them. Pennsylvainia does require it. I just worry that she crashes my car or something and I get sued all over the place.

Same thing for me... I'm doing the same thing with my fiancée -

She'll need a DL here in US (FL) but it's easier to get a license there vs. here. And, she might need a social security number here in FL or face grief.

So, I'll put her through driving school in Cali and have her obtain there.

But, are you saying that in addition to the DL (Colombian DL) - she'll need a second document like a permit or an international permit?

That's not what FL DMV told me on the phone a few weeks ago (like I should trust one call to one person there, huh?).

Thanks!

Florida does Not require both... went through this last year with a friend of the wife's. The Colombian license is all she will need. Not sure if they will accept the K-1 visa if she wants a fla license. You might have to wait until she adjusts status but I am not sure.

go to DMV.org and you can look up regulations in your state. I had to print them out in Louisiana and practically ram them down their throat. Dl attainment was a real pain in the butt here in Louisiana.

flaleo I just went to DMV.org and looked at it.
after going thru the links to myforida.com.
Paragraph J stated that the international driver license
IS NOT valid in the United States or it's posessions.
Also, my wife has one and they (florida) did not accept it.
We had to go thru a period of time waiting for her
Residents Card before she could get her regular Florida
drivers license. They really wern't all that cooperative
also. Pretty sure she will need a SSNO too.

Things may heve changed now, this was several years ago.
Better check with your insuarance carrier also.

Correct... I do not believe an International Driver Licence, by itsself, is valid to drive withoutjaving a valid DL issued by the government from the particular country. I reality it is only a translation, in ten languages, of what is contained in your "real"license. Bruce V. I don't think you need a SSN in Florida-at least the young man we are sending through college didn't. He was able to keep his Colombian DL by signing a half-ass affidavid(sp) that he was maintaing his Colombian residence.

Florida has to be the easiest place in the world to get a license, you drive around the carpark (parking lot) answer a few multiple choice questions and there you go. No real road test at all.

Come to think of it I think the license must be optional because I have been in 3 wrecks in the last few years, only one other driver had a license but she didn't have insurance. What a country, gotta love it.

Conflicting stories You misunderstood my post.

I make no claim of anything like an "International License" - they do have these and AAA can help and I've had one in the past (needed for an American in Indonesia at the time)...

I'm talking about a valid DL from the country of Colombia - not an Int'l License but a Colombian license to drive. My understanding is that a Colombian DL is good in FL - unless it's proven/obvious that you are a FL resident (which won't be the case for some initial months or more).

Any comments on a CO DL - not an Int'l License?

ACC Tell her to call the ACC here in Bogotá, they issue the International Drivers License. It did help me when getting a drivers license in Tennessee and then again in Boston. But then again I have never asked for one when travelling, my Colombian license seems to be good enough for renting cars.

please, read more closely I don't want her to obtain an Int'l License, so is there still a vaule to call ACC? She's in Cali, so anything in Bogota is not helpful.

I'm not looking to obtain anything that will help obtain a FL DL, nor in any other state. My understanding is that with a Colombian (not Int'l) DL one can drive in FL (basically for a long while, technically only until one becomes a perm resident).

No one is looking to drive inside Colombia, so there's no insurance issues here.

The closer you read the more confusing it is on just what you want. You and she can do the leg work yourselvs and the rest of us can go on to other things.

How come your wife is asking you about this? Isn't she in Colombia? My wife knew exactly how to get an International Driver's license and asked me if it was necessary. I told her, no, she could drive on her Colombian license in Txeas for a year.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.
