insurance

Hi all. My wife (colombian) and I (gringo) are considering moving to Bogota. We are set except on one point. She's pregnant (6 months) and we have yet to figure out how much insurance will cost. We have heard that the delivery would cost over $1000 out of pocket. Anyone buying health ins. have an idea? Thanks much! Rich

I believe that most insurance companies in Colombia will not treat a per condition even pregnancy....you may have to consider paying out of pocket....but if you look around you should get a better deal than 1000 us...more like 500 us you should be more than fine unless there are complications...then who knows

She won't be able to get (maternity) coverage now that she's pregnant, you know that. If you have insurance where you are, maybe you should wait until after she gives birth.

All Colombians are required to join a EPS (it's like an HMO). Payment is taken out of your paycheck on a monthly basis at something like 12% of salary. If you want a higher level of service, you can pay extra and join a regular health insurance plan like Humana, Bolivar or Cafesalud. These go for approx US$50 per month per person depending on your age and health.

QUESTION WHY would you want to have the baby in Colombia??????????

Stay in the States so your child gets automatic citizenship, THEN move to Colombia

Re: citizenship I'd have to agree, WHY have the baby in Colombia?

While citizenship won't be an huge obstacle, you need to do a registration of foreign birth, which I think shall substitue for his US birth certificate. And I don't know if you care (or your child will care) but his passport would forever say "Colombia" as place of birth.

Even if you intend to raise him in Colombia, I'd still jump thru any
necessary hoops to make him a citizen by birth in the country, if only to avoid any future where some citizens are more equal than others.
