You got to love the French:

Addressing France, she said: "I owe you everything.

"Extraordinary people took part in this operation. They weren't armed. There wasn't even one bullet fired. So I think that we succeeded in achieving the impossible. So all the contradictions which this started with actually came together so that a successful plan was put in motion

"It's now important for me to tell me how much I love you and show you how much I owe you. I have cried a lot. Today they are tears of joy, before they were tears of pain.

President Sarkozy said: "France loves you and welcomes you back"

President Sarkozy has fought for Betancourt's liberation since he took office, pushing for negotiations with her captors and urging the Colombian authorities to avoid any military action.

But her visit could be overshadowed by a domestic political spat between Sarkozy and his rival Segolene Royal. Royal said: "Everyone knows that this well-executed Colombian operation proves that negotiations with the FARC (guerrillas) were useless and fruitless. "Any controversy or political gain would be totally out of place because Nicolas Sarkozy had absolutely nothing to do with her liberation," she added.

Sarkozy was kept in the dark over the rescue mission due to his stance on military action, whereas the US government was kept informed all along. The French president only found out that Betancourt had been freed after Colombian forces brought her home.

Betancourt has captured the hearts of the French people over the past six years, who have staged countless marches and demonstrations on her behalf.

Bravo, Presidente Uribe for the perfect operation!

I don't know but she also owe a lot to France as i said they kept her in the spotlight for ages and sent that airplane to help her, France did pressure a bit the Colombian government to released her.

what ever she decided to do hopefully those 6 years in the jungle helped her to understand the situation of the hostages and that the guerrillas are no more than a group of terrorist and i think she will be a very good ambassador for Colombia, telling the world that the Farc are not guerrillas but terrorist, probably a good outcome for Colombia will come with her released, let's wait and see.

let's try not to be so negative about her.

Freed hostage Betancourt gets hero's welcome in France
04/07/2008 15h13

Nicolas Sarkozy made Ingrid Betancourt's release a top priority of his presidency
©AFP - Patrick KovarikPARIS (AFP) - Freed Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt said Friday she owed her life to France as President Nicolas Sarkozy gave her a hero's welcome to Paris, turning the page on her six-year hostage ordeal.

Snatched from the grip of Marxist FARC rebels in a Colombian army operation Wednesday, along with three US hostages and 11 Colombians, Betancourt arrived at an airbase west of Paris on board a French presidential flight from Bogota.

Applause broke out as the 46-year-old Betancourt, dressed in a dark blue suit, walked down the stairs of the plane to embrace Sarkozy and first lady Carla Bruni, waiting to welcome her to her second home.

"Dear Ingrid, we had been waiting for this for so long," said Sarkozy, who made Betancourt's release a top priority of his presidency. "Ingrid Betancourt, welcome. France loves you."

"I have shed many tears of pain and indignation. Today I am crying with joy," Betancourt, who also has French nationality, told the crowd waiting at the Villacoublay airbase near Paris, her voice shaking with emotion.

"I have just left my family in Colombia. My loved ones. But I wanted to be with my other family. In my dear France."

"I am so happy to breathe the air of France. I owe France everything," said the former Colombian presidential candidate.

Betancourt was followed out of the plane by her daughter Melanie, 22, and son Lorenzo, 19, who were flown to Bogota from Paris on the French government aircraft to be reunited with their mother on Thursday.

She and her family left the airbase in a convoy with Sarkozy and his wife, headed for the presidential palace.

Paris is where Betancourt grew up, studied and raised her family. Her children had waged a relentless campaign for their mother's release, making her a cause celebre in France.

"I owe my life to France. If France hadn't fought for me, I wouldn't be here making this extraordinary journey," she told reporters on the plane earlier.

Betancourt said in a radio interview late Thursday she had been chained up night and day for three years by her rebel captors, with only her Catholic faith as a solace.

"I was in chains all the time, 24 hours a day, for three years," she told Europe 1 radio. "I tried to wear those chains... with dignity, even if I felt that it was unbearable."

©AFP GraphicAsked whether she was tortured, she replied "Yes, yes." She said she saw her captors lapsing into "diabolical behaviour."

"It was so monstrous that I think they themselves were disgusted.

"I think you need tremendous spirituality to stop yourself falling into the abyss," she said.

A fervent Catholic who called her release a "miracle of the Virgin Mary," Betancourt has also been invited to meet Pope Benedict XVI next week. "It is a meeting that one cannot pass up," she told AFP.

Sarkozy's personal doctor, travelling on the flight, said her state of health was "satisfactory," according to a member of the delgation, but she was to undergo in-depth medical examinations once in Paris.

Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped by FARC rebels in 2002
©AFP - Patrick KovarikVideo footage earlier this year showed Betancourt looking frail and gaunt and she was reported to be suffering from a host of ailments including hepatitis.

Betancourt has urged Colombia and the international community to keep working to free the hundreds of other hostages still held by Colombia's FARC rebels, Latin America's most powerful left-wing insurgency.

The cunning rescue mission was a huge triumph in Colombian President Alvaro Uribe's long battle against the leftist rebel army.

In the humbled rebels' first reaction since the rescue, a news outlet close to FARC said they would be open to peace talks with the Uribe government.

"Definitely the future of Colombia cannot be civil war," read the statement on the pro-rebel Anncol news agency website, which urged FARC to "not waste a historic opportunity."

You can not make anybody be anything you want.

Maybe one day, when I am living in Colombia, my son will come to visit and falls in love with a Paisa, if he is not married by then with a gringa or other foreigner. (history repeats itself, I did it to my parents!)

as long as they visit it is ok :)) i am planing to spend more time in Colombia sp they know where to find me :)))

There she is in France, speaking to the French. It seems natural given the history that she would feel an enormous gratitude towards France and it is also appropiate she express it. Does she have to go through the whole list of people she's grateful to every time she speaks? I think that's a bit much. Saying France is her home doesn't mean that Colombia is not also her home (50-50, MaFe?) and saying she dreamed of this moment in France for so many years does not say she didn't dream of freedom in Colombia as well. Telling the assemblage their she owes them everything does not need to be interpreted to mean she feels no gratitude towards Colombia. This ordeal hasn't been a private one, it has been an ordeal the entire nation of Colombia has been enduring right along with her, and she has been made an icon of the suffering of all Colombians, but maybe we should allow her to be human, too, no? She was enormously and appropriately grateful and generous towards Uribe and his policies when she spoke in Colombia. How much more is it fair to demand? Here she is speaking with enormous grace and eloquence when probably most of us would still be rolling around on the ground or jumping up and down, making strange animal noises and not much else. Cut her a break for cyin' out loud!

Her mother has some serious grovelling to do in my opinion, but that's her mother, not her.

Wow this subject produced some lunacy. France had absolutely nothing to do with Betancourt's rescue. The French government has never taken a chance on anything, and never will. France did revive some public attention to her plight, but that was irrelevant to the situation. She went back to France because she has better political standing. She said nothing about the US because the US is not popular in France. For better or worse, she is a politician and is capitalizing politically. If you sympathize with that, well..lol.. nevermind..

France did a lot for her, just keeping her in the spotlight put pressure on the government to released her and other hostages, they even sent that plane when they found out Ingrid was not in a good health. thanks to her the world new about the problem Colombia face with the guerrillas and the situation of the hostages.
Alvaro Uribe knew that and by releasing her he knew will score points too.

Another think i was watching France24 and they interviewed some Colombian people on the street of Bogota and the majority agree that she owed to thanks France as they did a lot for her and that in Colombia she had little support.
lets face how many times we argued in this forum about France thinking that the only hostage was Ingrid.... they kept their crusade until the end.

And as BamacellI said, she has thanked over and over again the government of Colombia and president Uribe and if you listened very well she said in one of the interview she said she was proud of being Colombia and the Colombians.
She has said many nice thing about the Army and the president, that now everybody has Uribe on a pedestal.

JA Kat!! I just watched the CNN documnetary on Ingrid..you stated her children (and I quoted you above) are French...only 1% Colombian? Hmmmm...funny thing...her children speak with 100% COLOMBIAN accent in Spanish...yeah!! They speak SPANISH at home to their kids...HMMMMM!!
So Ingrid has PRESERVED her Colombian heritage pride to her children...HMMM...

Perfect example of what I was stating- Colombian mother, French father= children 100% proud of BOTH cultures...here I have to say Congrats to Ingrid! Congrats for her preserving her culture on her children...like HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of mixed couples have done!!

I must also take this time to ask how do you figure her children are only 1% Colombian? I supposed their monther being 100% COLOMBIANA doesn't fit into that equation?

Again HALF COLOMBIAN HALF FRENCH!!

I still haven't figured out their calculations! LOL!!
