Cypher, it all depends on what airline you're flying. some airlines are more lenient than others on weights.

Try calling the air carrier you'll be flying to Colombia, and make sure you ask what the weight allowance is on the flight you're taking. If you're connecting (most likely, you are) ask what the weight allowance is for BOTH flights, and then don't pack more than the flight with the least allowance. Sometimes, it depends on the airplane (larger airplanes allow heavier bags), so if you're taking a small airplane and a big airplane, then you'll have to pack for the small airplane's allowance.

Call the airline (or airlines) and ask them individually because baggage weight allowance isn't universal. :D

Tell me what cities you're flying to and from, and the dates you want and I'll see if I can find you something cheap!

flights bog neiva bog s. andres I need some information about the timeschedule and duration about the flights:
Bogota neiva (morning)
neiva- bogota - s.andres (are there a connection flight?)

and, after, by car from Neiva how long to reach Tierradentro? Is safe?
again how long to go from San Agustin to Neiva by car? It's safe?

My ides is flight to Neiva from Bogota and, same day, reach Tierradentro: it's possible to do in daylight time?
Same problem Leave early in the morning San Agustin by car, reach Neiva, fly to Bog, take a connection to San Andres, it's possible?
Thanks

Iberia and the 20 kg rule Hi

My boyfriend returned home to Colombia this week :( and flew with Iberia.

He was overweight on his luggage and Iberia charged 250 pounds for 8 kgs!!!

Very stressful saying goodbye and chucking out luggage at the airport...I don't recommend the experience.

Just thought I should warn you that Iberia WILL charge for extra luggage.

via USA If you are willing to put up with the inconveniences of transiting via the USA you can get two pieces of luggage per passenger. So call American, Delta or Continental. Another option is Air Canada via Toronto.

I done that Juanalejo, never again! I flew to Colombia with Intercontinental via Houston, When you get to the USA you have to do emigration (huge queues),pick your suitcases, and take them to the continental check out, then you procced to your departure gate but no before you go again through security where they tell you to take even your shoes, so remmember to wear clean socks. and this is another damm long queue, but the time you get to your departure gate you are dead.
And it's a long flight, 13 hours to Houston and then 4 and half to Bogota.

On my flight... To Colombia Copa tried to charge me for a third bag. I pointed out that Continental allowed three and thry complied with Continentals rules without charging me.

On the return trip I wanted to check all my and my wifes luggage since we had to go to the carousel anyway. They wanted to charge a hundred dollars for my wifes third bag and a hundred dollars for my third bag. After much confusion they let us each carry one on for no charge.

Avianca and Iberia do only allow 20 kilos for flights to Bogota and have done so for a couple of years now. This can be spread over two suitcases, as long as the total doea not exceed 20 kilos. I am not sure on their hand language rules but it is about 5-6 kilos per person.

British Airways used to allow 23 kilos but they stopped the Lon-Bog route this Feb.

Only alternative is going via the US, which can be a hassle. Why is is so? Because these flights come into Colombia really late at night after you have come in from a connection from Europe and so it will mean missing any connecting national flights.

But if this does not bother you (having to stay the night in Bogota and then flying the next day) or you are intending to stay in Bogota anyway, then it is a way of getting a 2 piece luggage allowance at 32 kilos each.

I have flown with Delta via Atlanta (10 hours to Atlanta then 4 hours to Bogota) and AA via Miami (9 hours to Miami then 3 hours to Bogota). Of course on the way back of that route we did Bogota- Miami, then Miami-JFK and then JFK-London, which was a bit of a pain, but it breaks the trip up.

Yeah the immigration is a hassle but the connection times are big so there is time to kill. With both airlines your luggage goes through straight to your final destination. The only exception was when we were coming from Bogota and arrived in Miami, we had to pick up our lugagge, go through customs and then re-hand it over to AA because our next flight was into JFK and therefore not an international connection.

I just bought my tickets from Madrid to Bogota (Iberia) and was explained that the 20 kilo rule is only FROM colombia to Europe, but Europe to colombia you can bring 40 kilos.

Wanna be safe? Check just 2 bags and make sure neither is more than 50 lbs. Some airlines might allow more weight per bag but many have adopted a two bag per person maximum and each bag can only weigh 50 lbs maximum. More bags and or more than 50 lbs and you maybe charged! Check your airline and just because one carrier does one thing doesn't mean the other will.

When the three of us went to Colombia last year we checked in 6 bags total 2 X 3 = 6 and each bag weighed around 48 lbs EACH. We had just two carry on pieces for the 3 of us and we had no problems.

Step on you bathroom scale then stand on the scale while holding your bag and subtract the first number from the second aand there you have its weight! Avoid a hassle and fight at the counter.

DONT put locks on your baggage cause TSA will cut them off no questions asked.

Have a nice flight!

Ipdiver You mentioned that Continental allows three bags? When I travelled with them to Peru a couple years ago, it was only two bags allowed. I am positive this is what it was because I bought a guitar in Quito, where I was flying home from, and I had to stuff my guitar with clothes and basically use it as my second bag otherwise it would have cost me an extra $150 or so, I can't remember the exact figure. Maybe they've changed their requirements.

thanks everyone.. great info you gave me

going via the US sounded good but the thing was that the person im travelling with needs a US visa.. anyway..

i just booked my flight wooohoooo!!! so excited!! its a trek but for the extra baggage its worth it =)
its london-lisbon-caracas-caracas-lisbon-london got it via TAP,cost me £460 and 2 bags of 32 kilos each =)
then from caracas -bogota -bogota- caracas with aero postal is like 228USD and they allow 2 bags 32 kilos too.. but only in low season.. also as the flight gets into caracas early like 2pm local time, you can catch a connecting flight the same afternoon/evening
but as i am there already.. might aswell see what venezuela has to offer, lol

i have another question though i am going to need connection flights to armenia and bucaramanga, i will arrive on 3rd of june and want to stay the weekend in bogota and then go to armenia on the 5th, is it easy to get flights once im there? or shall i get someone to book them for me? also during my stay i will be making short trips here, there, and everywhere really, lol ... and also need to know if its quite easy to get fligths a few days before or so? by easy i mean that there is availability... oh yeh one more thing anyone know if the price difference of booking say a month in advance is a lot compared to a few days?
