information on boattrip Leticia->Iquitos

Hello,
I am thinking of taking the boat from Leticia to Iquitos and then fly to Lima, instead of flying Bogota-Lima. Can anyone give me information/tips about this boattrip? How about some information about travelling to Leticia in general? Thanks a lot

I did it 2 years ago so not the most up to date information.

I started from Iquitos and travelled in the other direction.

My hotel in Leticia was nothing special but I´ll try and find the name and send it to you.

In leticia you are able to walk accross the border into Brasil which is nice if your not going to enter Brasil at any other stage of your travels.

I found the people there extremely friendly and had an extremely large amount of beers bought for me.

The boat ride is in quite a crowded boat. you sleep in hammocks and the sides of th boat are open and the fact your moving keeps the air travelling through and keeping you cool.

I remember it cost around $5 a day including meals. You stop every now and then to drop off supplies and people and can walk around the towns.

On the boat you are quite far from shore and will see little wildlife. If your aim to travel this area is to see flora and Fauna I recommend doing a tour from Iquitos or Leticia.

Iquitos I found quite an Intersting place and could have spent more time there. very different from the rest of Peru. Get someone to take you around the poorer barrio which is built out in the water in canoe.

Lunch and a few beers out there is quite a good experience.

Hopefully someone with more up to date info will add on to this if not Private mail me any questions

the bad news is that the trip Leticia-Iquitos is at least twice as long as the reverse trip being that it is up stream... the boat certainly is an experience..... i have done it a few times.. the last time i did it.. i actually got of before it left as the girl my friend and i were taking a long could not handle the cramp conditions and lack of privacy.... if youre up for an experience and meeting some local people youll love it... i found on my trip that there was really no where to be except the hammock.. no space whatsoever....

if you really want to take a boat trip and enjoy it do the leticia-manaus trip... great time.... plenty of space and great deck up top to sip beers and watch the world go by.....

you can also take a fast boat from leticia - iquitos

i also really enjoyed iquitos... there are some wild women there though... you have been warned.....

how about some boat trip information within colombia......try the llanos or how about quibdo-turbo... that would be fun....... i have done a few trips up the pacific coast and from puerto lopez to orocue but thats about it...

MV Rio Amazonas Is one of the boats that does the trip. Here is some of the info I recieved from another forum when researching the area:

"I travelled from the trifrontier to Iquitos twice & nearly a 3rd time with MV Rio Amazonas, to get from Brazil to Peru. Rather than an expensive flight, MVRA supplies transport, accommodation & side trips with an English speaking guide up tributaries, lagoons etc. Paul Wright's company has been going a long time & has other boats too like La Arca"

"I travelled with 5 people, then 12 people, then the 3rd time it was full because I did not book ahead.
Email to ask if they have space, & they may contact you if it is nearly full. The company has operated many years & they would not want any problems"

BTW, go over to www.lonelyplanet.com, and search the thorntree (on the left hand menu bar). Some good avail there.

for information write an e-mail to Felipe at elpipe80 at hotmail.com . He is a tour guide in Leticia and will be able to help you himself and/or give you lots of valuable info. Highly recommended; I was in Leticia earlier this year.

how long by boat? and what about Gorgona thanks a lot for the info..
a regular boattrip leticia-iquitos, how long is that? 3days? 4 days?
I read that Rio Amazonas is a few hundred bucks, I prefer a cheap alternative, how expensive are the fast boats?
Basically I dont care too much about the views during the trip, I will do nice trips in Leticia (and Iquitos). I am just looking for some cheap and fast way to go to Iquitos. Leticia is my last stop in Colombia and Peru is next, and hey I heard good things about Iquitos (and the grrls) so why not go there ;) Maybe there are cheap flights from Leticia-Iquitos? Anyway, thanks so far.
By the way, gorgonabob, I am thinking of visiting Isla Gorgona, whats the best way to get there, take a bus from Bogota to Buenaventura and then the boat?

its a great trip Its a wonderful trip....definetily worthwhile... You fly to leticia for 250,000 pesos.... and then you have two options, though i recommend staying in Leticia for some days because its a fun town....and you have tabatinga right next to it. Afterwards you can either get an expreso boat which costs 50 bucks and arrives in iquitos 12 hours later. I have done it and its a good trip...it happens fast and the boat is confortable. The second option is taking a bog boat...which can take 4to 5 days against the current. There you can hang your hammock and you sleep, read, spend time talking to some of the very funny characters on it....it`s a bit tiring because its monotonous...and everything sort of looks the same....but it`s romantic in an way...it`s the typical kind of boat that you see in the movies about the amazon river....

Iquitos is great... much bigger than leticia...there its easy to buy a plane ticket to lima.... or you can continue up the Ucayali river to Pucallpa...another peruvian jungle city...which has a road connection to Lima. it takes 24 hours to get to Lima by bus....

have a good trip. if you have any questions I would be glad to help, for I have done all those trips in the various modalities, because I lived in pucallpa for year.
