Info about Cartago needed

I´ve got an offer to work in Cartago Valle. I don´t know so much (or rather nothing) about this town. It´s not that far away from Pereira (about 40 minuites by bus) but that´s everything I know. Can someone give me some info of Cartago and its surroundings..
Thanks in advance.

Cartago Lowell, you mind info my way also? Is difficult to locate anything on the internet so far (Email: lampltr at bww.com) thanks. My wife & family are from La Virginia so this is the closest city for needs to them. My wife says 20 minutes by car from Periera if anyone cares to know. 40 minutes by bus is right on the money but do travel by day only north of Cartago, trust me hehe.

Feel free to give me a yell too,I'm in Armenia, so it is kind of close. I don't know too much about Cartago, but I can help out with stuff around here.

Cartago... very hot small city (or big town) in the Norte del Valle, about 30 min from Pereira and 2.30 hours from Cali. Not a very pretty city but the setting is quite nice, it's set on a flat valley by the banks of the Cauca river and you have the cordilleras hovering on the sides. It's also the epicenter of the Norte del Valle drug cartel which has been pretty active the last few years, so there is a good deal of drug-related violence in the area but if you're not involved and keep a low profile you should probably be OK safety-wise. Still though, there are many nicer and safer places in Colombia so take your time and think a little before accepting. If you do accept, I'd recommend you live in Pereira and commute to work, Pereira is a city with much more to offer and more bearable weather.

OK When I get back from town I'll e-mail You guys. I don't post anymore due to a person in California going sideways on me for no reason, threatening me and my family. All for the better. More time to play with my baby girl

The same Pereira where the girl with NO tits lived ? Pereira is a city with much more to offer and more bearable weather.

Really ? I’ve been to Pereira numerable occasions and 9 times out of 10 it rains that day? Geeeeez,,,, Cartago must be miserable.

Even the Horses in Pereira have rain gear !!!

I will give Pereira credit where credit is due,, they have well behaved bums and druggies sleeping in the street..

keep a low profile you should probably be OK safety-wise

Holy smoke,, I’ve been lucky,, I owe my life to the fact it must have been a “No purge gringos day” the night I traveled in the Northern Part of Valle del Cauca !!!!

Just think,, all those glowing eyes I saw along the roadside were probably FARC,, or WORSE !!!!!!!!!1 and I thought they were deer !!!

Just last week I was inspecting the wood for my latest project,, it's coming along,, should be dry in a week or so.

Poco, I don't know what you're trying to get at or if you're just trying to be funny. I am from the region, my whole family is from there (though not exactly from Pereira so I think I'm not biased) and lived there myself many years, so I think I know what I'm talking about. Of course, different people will have different opinions about places, but I was giving a serious answer and you just make a mockery out of it... I can't let this pass.

The rain... yes it probably does rain nearly everyday for at least a few hours, but by no means does it rain all the time... not much different from most other cities located in the mountains, and thank god because it's thanks to the rain that we have such a beautiful green countryside and fertile lands. What I refer to as more "bearable weather" is particularly regarding the temperature, whereas in Pereira it hovers around a comfortable 25 degrees, in Cartago its probably more like 35 degrees (and drier weather, yes). Your pictures of horses and bums are amusing, but by no means specific to Pereira, they could be from any colombian city (including Bogota). It's sad many people's only reference to Pereira is the novela Sin Tetas No Hay Paraiso, I guess Pereira's residents are right to protest the image which is being portrayed of the city. The whole mafia-silicone phenomena sure exists in Pereira, but if anything it was imported from Cali and Medellin. There's much more to the city than that, sorry you can't see the fact that it's one of the most dynamic medium-sized cities in Colombia, which recently inaugurated the second trans-milenio type massive transportation system in the country, as a part of a broader urban management plan which has transformed the former dodgiest part of the city into a modern shopping mall with all the comforts and a new Centro de Convenciones. I'll add as well that it has a decent offer of nightlife and restaurants, and there's even a pretty active cultural life with museums and concerts. And last but not least, the surroundings offer numerous options for weekend getaways, everything from tanning your ass off in a finca in Cerritos (road that leads to Cartago) to enjoying the hot springs in the cold mountains of Santa Rosa.

All this said, it has many shortcomings and contrary to what some may believe after reading this, it is not my favorite place in Colombia. But I do give Pereira credit where credit is due.

I beleive that litost hit it on the head I was in Cartago 1 timelast year. My impressions were that it was very hot and not very safe. As far as the Pereira comments, I have a place there and enjoy it. It is far cleaner than Cali and more organized. The rain doesn't really affect me as it did not seem to rain everyday.

I would NOT want to stay any length of time in Cartago, but report back maybe I am mistaken. BTW-they have a saying in Pereira when they describe something big and ugly they compare it to Cartago:

"es grande y feo como Cartago"
